Written To The Jews

the book is not written to the church
though many lessons can be brought out for us to learn
we will see the city of Jerusalem through out
we will see many shadows of the Messiah in lessons
ultimately will see the Messiah on the throne in Jerusalem
the visions and the sermons that Zechariah preached are coming directly from the Yahweh
coming from God

Yahweh of hosts

God of Armies
Joshua met Him outside of Jericho
Joshua 5:15 LEB
The commander of Yahweh’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
the first 6 verses of this book is a sermon to establish a theme for the book
repentance and turn to God
rebuild the city, and worship Gods way
Read Zechariah 1 1-6
Pray

Time Period

Zechariah 1:1 (LEB)
In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of Yahweh came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, son of Iddo, saying,
Ezra 4:24 LEB
Then the work on the house of God in Jerusalem stopped, and was discontinued until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Haggai 1:1 LEB
In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day, the word of Yahweh came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,
Ezra 5:1 LEB
Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and in Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over them.
possibly came with Zerubbabel
Nehemiah 12:1–4 (LEB)
These are the priests and the Levites who came up with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra,
Amariah, Malluch, Hattush, Shecaniah, Rehum, Meremoth, Iddo, Ginnethoi, Abijah,
one last contemporary
Daniel 6:9 LEB
So the king, Darius, signed the writing and the interdict.
Daniel 6:10 (LEB)
Now when Daniel realized that the document was signed, he went to his house
all of the books of the old testament are not isolated to themselves

Return To Me

a call for repentance
over and over God called the people of Israel to do things His way
to follow the law, to worship Him only
Before they went into the promised land, Moses gave them a warning
Deut 28
Blessings and curses about following the Lord
Zechariah 1:2 LEB
“Yahweh was very angry with your ancestors.
they worshipped other gods
did not follow the law
their deeds were evil
because of that they were exiled to Babylon and Assyria
Zechariah 1:3 LEB
You must say to them: ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts: “Return to me,” declares Yahweh of hosts, “and I will return to you,” says Yahweh of hosts.
What is God promising here to the people of Jerusalem?
the same promise that moses gave in Deut
These people want to be blessed.. Who wouldn't
they want protection, good crops, strong children
Here Zechariah is preaching this message
Return to God
Return to His blessings
don’t be like your ancestors
Zechariah 1:4 LEB
“Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts: “Return from your evil ways and your evil deeds!” ’ But they did not hear and they did not pay attention to me,” declares Yahweh.
the ancestors, God sent prophets to warn them
to bring them back
to teach them how to receive Gods blessing
when we read Ezra, and Nehemiah we find some of the sin going on in the city
the rich were forcing the poor into slavery and high interest rates
the people were marrying with the people of the world
they were not obeying the Sabbath
the laws of God are for every generation to obey
Pay attention to me God says
I want to bless you I want to give you a good life
but its up to you
Zechariah 1:5 LEB
“Your ancestors, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever?
your ancestors lived in sin died in sin
the prophets warned of sin and died giving the warning
the offer of repentance was a brief period
and was not accepted
Zechariah 1:6 LEB
However, did not my words and my regulations which I commanded my servants the prophets overtake your ancestors? And they repented and said, ‘Yahweh of hosts planned to do with us according to our ways, and according to our deeds so he has dealt with us.’ ” ’ ”
in the end the ancestors had to admit that God did what He said He would do
In the end there will be a judgement of sin
in Solomon’s final conclusion in
Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 LEB
Now that all has been heard, here is the final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.
God’s judgement is coming
Noah was 120 years telling of judgement
God is longsuffering about judgement, but like in verse 6 it will overtake you
Zechariah is telling the people who lived through the punishment. Return to me!
But there is a problem with the unrepentant
they are blinded by satan
no matter what punishment is given the total depravity of man will continue to do every thing against God
Revelation 9 20-21
Revelation 16 1-11
Man will not repent and turn to God on his own
in fact they killed Zechariah the one who was telling them God will help you if you just turn to Him
Jesus spoke of him
Matthew 23:35 LEB
so that upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on the earth from the blood of righteous Abel up to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.
the Law, the Chosen nation of Israel
the blessings promised, and curses promised
tell us that no one can keep the law
no matter what the promise
so the Old Testament people could not on their own keep the law, live up to the blessings
always fell killed the prophets that were there to warn them
tried to exhort them to return to God
Lets look at another group of Old testament people

The Elders Of The Faith

Turn to Hebrews 11
By faith one is made righteous, not by doing good
Read 1-9
Abraham was righteous by faith and not by works
Galatians 2:16 LEB
but knowing that a person is not justified by the works of the law, if not by faith in Jesus Christ, and we have believed in Christ Jesus so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will be justified.
Abraham believed the Gospel
Abraham believed God
Abraham believed in the coming Messiah who would take away the sins of the world
Galatians 3:6–8 LEB
Just as Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness, then understand that the ones who have faith, these are sons of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, proclaimed the good news in advance to Abraham: “In you all the nations will be blessed.”
the blessings of God to the nation of Israel were for their prosperity not salvation
some are confused when they see the promise of God to return to them, if the people turn to God
as being a salvation message
some see this promise as proof of losing and regaining salvation
it is not, Salvation is only through faith
Salvation is a gift from God
Salvation is given to us by God’s Grace
if you are saved today thank God for His Grace that changed you
If you are not saved today you have one of two attitudes
1 I’m not saved and need Jesus to save me
2 I’m good, no thanks, I’ll do this on my own
The only way to be saved is to Believe on the Lord Jesus
put your faith in His finished work on the cross
