As we move towards the end of the sermon, it might seem like Matthew is just gathering disconnected fragments of Jesus' teaching. But there's a clear thread still running through this middle section of the sermon, focussed on Christian behaviour, and that's our relationship with 'our Father in heaven'. In 7:1-12, it's this relationship that must shape our relationships with others.
