Trouble
Psalms 86
Hear me, Lord, and answer me,
for I am poor and needy.
2
Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God; 3 have mercy on me, Lord,
for I call to you all day long.
4
Bring joy to your servant, Lord,
5
for I put my trust in you. You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
abounding in love to all who call to you.
6
Hear my prayer, Lord;
listen to my cry for mercy.
7
When I am in distress, I call to you,
because you answer me.
Psalms 86
Among the gods there is none like you, Lord;
no deeds can compare with yours.
9
All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord;
they will bring glory to your name.
10
For you are great and do marvelous deeds;
you alone are God.
11
Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an
undivided heart, that I may fear your name.
12
I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart;
I will glorify your name forever.
13
For great is your love toward me;
you have delivered me from the depths,
from the realm of the dead.

Psalms 86
Arrogant foes are attacking me, O God;
ruthless people are trying to kill me—
they have no regard for you.
15
But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
16
Turn to me and have mercy on me;
show your strength in behalf of your servant;
save me, because I serve you
just as my mother did.
17
Give me a sign of your goodness,
that my enemies may see it and be put to shame,
for you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

• Psalms 86 teaches us to HUMBLE ourselves
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.” (Matt 5:3)

When trouble comes: Praise God
• Which way do you look when you are troubled - behind,
downward?
• Psalms 86 teaches us, look UPWARD
“Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of this world will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.”
Psalms 86: Be Taught
Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your
faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may
fear your name…
11
13
For great is your love toward me;
you have delivered me from the depths,
from the realm of the dead.
When trouble comes: Be Taught
• What is your mindset when experiencing trouble - do you feel
angry? Anxious?
• Psalms 86 teaches us to REFLECT and REMEMBER
- What is God teaching us through this experience?
- What did God do before in our lives to help us?
Psalms 86: Wait with Hope
Turn to me and have mercy on me;
show your strength in behalf of your servant;
save me, because I serve you
just as my mother did.

Give me a sign of your goodness,
that my enemies may see it and be put to shame,
for you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.
16
When trouble comes:
Wait with Hope
• When experiencing trouble, do you immediately need to take
action? Or do you disengage and withdraw?
• Psalms 86 teaches us to LOOK FOR God’s action and response
- God is responsible for our lives because we are His
- What is God doing to help me through this hardship?

What David didn’t know: Ps 86
17
Give me a sign of your goodness…
Oth: sign, token, outward manifestation
“A Sign”
Hebrew: Oth: sign, mark, token
Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the
sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they
13
eat the lambs…. The blood will be a sign for you on the
houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass
over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike
Egypt. (Exodus 12)
7
“A Sign”
Greek: Semeion: sign, mark, token
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you
11
good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today
in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the
12
Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a
baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
(Luke 2)
10
God’s Sign: Isaiah 53
Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
5
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
4
Know Him More: 1 Peter 2
… Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you
22
should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and no
deceit was found in his mouth…”
21
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that
we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his
wounds you have been healed.”
24
Become More Like Him:
Tim Keller
“Jesus Christ did not suffer so that you would not
suffer. He suffered so that when you suffer you’ll
become more like him. The gospel does not promise
you better life circumstances; it promises you a better
life.”
Philippians 3
I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of
his resurrection and participation in his
sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
11
and so, somehow, attaining to the
resurrection from the dead.
10
Become Complete: James 1
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and
sisters, whenever you face trials of many
3
kinds, because you know that the testing
4
of your faith produces perseverance. Let
perseverance finish its work so that you
may be mature and complete, not lacking
anything.
2
Manifest God’s Plan: Genesis 50
But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place
20
of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for
good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of
many lives.”
19
John 12
Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls
to the ground and dies,it remains only a single
seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
24
He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to
gain what he cannot lose. (Jim Elliot)
Display God’s Work: John 9
As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His
disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his
parents, that he was born blind?”
2
“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but
this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in
him.”
3
John Piper
And if you join the disciples in asking: Why? Who sinned that
this man must suffer like this?...
The decisive explanation is: he is suffering that the works of
God might be displayed in him. The works of wrath-bearing,
and curse-removing, and guilt-lifting, and righteousnessproviding, and death-defeating, and life-giving, and in the end
suffering-removing — totally removing.
