Psalm 119:11 ESV
11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
This series is about how we worship God.
Paul appealed to us to “Present our bodies as a LIVING SACRIFICE” that this is our “Spiritual Worship”
So it very fitting this morning that this section would start with an important question form the psalmist...
Psalm 119:9 ESV
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
“How can a young man keep his way pure?”
Psalmist points to a “persona”
THE YOUNG MAN
Person who is trying to find a good standard of living.
“Young” doesn’t mean ignorant
“Young” means seeking answers.
The young person is faced with a real dilemma!
There are many standard to choose from. (even then)
NOW we have postmodernism.
We praise God because His ways are perfect.
The claim here is two fold
(inference) God is the perfect.
God imparts this perfection into His word.
Inerrancy of Scripture
We praise God because He gave us is perfect word.
So our love for perfect God is met with an acknowledgment that His word is also perfect.
A DESIRE for God is coupled with a DESIRE for His word.
that’s what we see in verse 10.
Psalm 119:10 ESV
10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!
Do you seek God with your whole heart.
That sounds a lot like the MOST IMPORTANT COMMANDMENT!!!
Seeking GOD includes seeking HIS WORD.
Living for God means living according to His word.
You cannot claim to live for God and then live according to another standard of truth.
It’s possible to BELIEVE in God and live according to another standard
But that means you
Believe in God but reject Him.
How do you live for God according to His word?
Psalm 119:11 ESV
11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
“I have stored up you word in my heart”
Preservation
Accumulation
you have to know God’s word to store it.
There are plenty of things that we learn about.
Of all the things we learn about in life, God’s word is the single most important. Because it sets that standard for everything we learn and ultimately everything we do.
the psalmist proclaims the reason for storing up God’s word...
“...that I might not sin against you.”
We worship God when we seek Him through His word.
Listen to the devotion the psalmist has for God through His word…
Psalm 119:12 ESV
12 Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes!
YOU teach me your truth, God.
Maybe via a preacher, teacher
Maybe directly
Teach me by the gift YOUR HOLY SPRIT!!!
The Gift of salvation bought By Jesus Christ was also a gift of access to God via His HOLY SPIRIT.
Psalm 119:13 ESV
13 With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.
I live according to YOUR TRUTH.
I declare it openly
(Even when it’s hard)
Psalm 119:14 ESV
14 In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.
We attach value to so many things in this world.
Recognize the value of God’s word.
We are reminded how deeply we are to be commited to God’s word.
Psalm 119:15–16 (ESV)
15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.
16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
medite
fix my eyes
find (true”) delight in statute
It may seem as if I imploring you to learn God’s word. I mist certainly am
BUT Reading, even memorizing it, isn’t enough.
James challenges us when He says
James 1:22 ESV
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
How often are challenged to be better on Sunday and forget all about it on Monday.
Is learning God’s truth really worship if we don’t put into practice.?
Do we really learn God’s word if it doesn’t change us?
***James says no to both!!!!
My challenge this more is to Worship God in His word.
I’m not only saying LEARN IT … I’m saying DO IT!!!
When am I being a DOER of God’s word?
two most important commandments:
Love God
We have said this morning that includes meeting Him in HIS word
Love others
There are also SO MANY ways we love others
I’d like to suggest one (a great foundation)
Pray for them.
When you pray for others, your asking God to help you see them the way HE sees them.
Prayer makes you aware of dependance
Prayer draws you toward compassion
Think of Jesus on the cross, “Father forgive them, they don’t know know what they are doing.”
Prayer takes everything you have learned through God’s word and injects it into a personal conversation with God.
As much as reading Gods word MUST be a part of a Christians life
So should prayer - (it leads to being a doer)
You pray alone.
You pray with family (spouse).
You pray with your church.
