John 19 Sermon

Introduction:

There are passages of scripture that every Christian knows but the one we read typically at Easter is one we tend to ignore. This passage of scripture is one that brings tears to my eyes; and one that I am going to preach that I need just as much as you.

I am a fifthly rotten sinner who like the characters describes in this text murdered the Son of God. This text will convict you and if you leave without being convicted, I plead with you don’t leave. Read this passage over and over until you are saved.

May God save and protect us in the reading, hearing, and preaching of His word today.

Verses 1 -3: *The Scourging* Jesus who has been fond with no guilt by the Jews or Pilate himself was non the less handed over to for crucifixion. The following verses display the evil intentions of man but not outside the will of the Father or the Son.

Jesus standing before Pilate would be scourged, a crown of thorns placed on his head, and a purple robe draped over his beaten body. The scourging of Rome is nothing to take lightly and depending on the severity of the scourge could be a light beating as a child with a wooden pallet, or the whipping of whips with lashes to the back.

Jesus upon this scourging did not have enough strength to carry the cross to Goltha, so Jospeh carried the cross for the crucifixion of Jesus.

Verses 4-6Pilate finds no fault

Pilate has no found fault of Jesus but Pilate is a people pleaser in a position that requires him to play both Rome and peace keeper with the Jews. The Political climate to which Pilate would navigate was not and is not an easy one.

Both Rome and Jew by this point understand that Jesus is causing a stir, not to answer the Jews wishes would cause a revolt against Rome to which Pilate overseas as one to keep the peace. The Jews inciting in verse 12 that if you free this man who claims to be a King, then you are no longer friend of Cesear, because Cesar is the only King.

The Jews hatred of Christ and even Rome, pins Pilate between a rock and a hard place. The freeing of Jesus was not an option. Pilate passives the people of Rome and the Jewish People with the desire of crucifixion. Blood thirsty depraved humans seeking to murder the one who claims to be the Son of God.

Verses 10 -11

Pilate reminds Jesus that he has authority, but Jesus reminds Pilate that no authority is given accept that which is given from God. Jesus would submit this crucifixion for it is the will of the Father and the Son to become the atonement, the redemption of the elect people of God.

Verses 13-15We Have no King but Cesar

Pilate in the place of judgement asks one more time about the penalty of death for Jesus who he gives the title of King. The Jews refuse Jesus once more and at this very moment their heart becomes reality, they state with a bold claim, “We have no King but Cesar”.

The pure hatred towards Jesus is so raw that the Jews who despised Rome would in that very moment declare Cesar as King. That is a political climate of hatred towards one man from both Rome and Jew. Here the Jews would seek the murder of God in the flesh.

Verses 15 -22

Here Jesus is handed over to crucifixion between two criminals to face murder as the true King of Kings.

Application:

1. Be warned of the hatred of Jesus within your own soul.

This narrative involves Pilate, but it really involves the hatred of the Jewish people of God Himself. Jesus for three years ministered and preached among the Jews with nothing but the word of God from the prophets and law which spoke of Jesus and yet they murdered him.

Evangelical Christianity in the west is like the Jew who by their own words and actions murder Christ within their heart. They claim to know God and even his word, but so did the Jews who at the confrontation of Pilate screamed we have no King but Romes Cesar.

The modern-day Christian is filled with the worship of idols and false gods, while playing religion in the name of the most of High. It is evident with modern churches

· Their devotion is to self and their narcissistic cries when the worship team plays the wrong song or the preacher stands firm and calls the religious to the biblical Jesus. They refute quickly to their emotionalism in defense of a god they created in their own image. One that says its okay to keep sinning so long as trying to beat it, rather than the Lord and apostles which say pursue holiness and examine your salvation to know that is is real.

· Their churches are filled with strange fire in worship with the words of men and emotional pleading being lifted up rather than the very words of God and the truth of the gospel

· Their preacher would rather please man than serve God and calls sinners to repent. Their preachers would rather preach a message that leaves the church leaving feeling happy rather than convicted on the need of atonement.

· The religious narcissist will quickly leave the church when the full word of God is being preached; they are much like the Jew that when the word of God was preached and stood before them, they cried we have no king but Cesar.

2. The good news of the Gospel

· If you sitting here today or listening at a later time are convicted of your own sin, praise God. For the reason of Yeshua surrendering to the murder of the Jew and Rome, was for the atonement of the sinner to be freed from the very bondage of sin. Praise God you are convicted of sin.

· If you who are convicted of sin hear this message today, repent and believe in the true Yeshuah is the LORD who saves. Salvation can be yours today at the cost of the life of Jesus himself.

· Sin so great is wiped away, forgiven and a new nature is given. The righteousness of Christ is upon those who are born again. No longer are you an enemy of God but a friend.

3. Notice the words of Jesus upon the cross in Luke 23:34 Forgive them. To even the Jew and the diving the lots of his clothes Jesus cried out to the Father, forgive them. The Jew an enemy of God, the pagan an enemy of God, the gentile an enemy of God; Christ cries out forgive them.

· This forgiveness can be yours upon the repentance and confession of faith.

Conclusion: The call to salvation and reminder of the sacrament.
