TASTE AND SEE

It’s Thanksgiving Week!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Last week we began a miniseries on Psalms of Thanksgiving.
We will continue that this week by looking at Psalm 34
Psalm 34 CSB
Concerning David, when he pretended to be insane in the presence of Abimelech, who drove him out, and he departed. I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. I will boast in the Lord; the humble will hear and be glad. Proclaim the Lord’s greatness with me; let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me and rescued me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him from all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and rescues them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. How happy is the person who takes refuge in him! You who are his holy ones, fear the Lord, for those who fear him lack nothing. Young lions lack food and go hungry, but those who seek the Lord will not lack any good thing. Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is someone who desires life, loving a long life to enjoy what is good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech. Turn away from evil and do what is good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry for help. The face of the Lord is set against those who do what is evil, to remove all memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit. One who is righteous has many adversities, but the Lord rescues him from them all. He protects all his bones; not one of them is broken. Evil brings death to the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be punished. The Lord redeems the life of his servants, and all who take refuge in him will not be punished.
This Psalm has one of my favorite lines of the psalms in it.
We will get there.
We will see if you can identify it when we get there.
So lets do.
Let’s dig into to this Thanksgiving meal of the Word.
Psalm 34
Psalm 34 CSB
Concerning David, when he pretended to be insane in the presence of Abimelech, who drove him out, and he departed. I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. Have you verbalized your praise?
Have you spoken your praise?
Have you audiblized your praise?
Theres something that happens in your spirit when your praise come out.
When you begin to sound the blessing your begin to strengthen your faith and you begin to announce to the situation that God is bigger than your trial, God is bigger than your situation, God is bigger than your pain, God is bigger than your need, God is bigger than the mountain in front of you.
Sound your praise.
I need some shouters this morning.
I need some folks who wont boast in their own strength or plans or schemes or abilities or might but will shout their boast in the LORD
The humble hear the shouts are rejoice.
The humble hear the praise and are glad.
Be cause the LORD’s greatness is near.
Our boasting isn’t in our greatness but in the greatness of our God.
Bless the LORD.
Open your mouth in praise.
Bless the LORD.

He Answered Me

Psalm 34:4-7
Psalm 34:4–7 CSB
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and rescued me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him from all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and rescues them.
We gonna shout because the LORD came near when I sought Him
I’m gonna shout.
I’m gonna seek the LORD.
I’m gonna shout.
I’m gonna praise.
I’m gonna be thankful.
He has rescued my from all my fears.
In the book “Here Are Your Gods’ by Christopher Wright he says this about how the thing we fear become false gods.
“We turn things that we fear into gods in order to placate them or ward them off by our worship. There are as many gods as we have terrors.
It is significant, therefore, that the fear of the Lord plays such a central role in the biblical worldview. It is a potent dimension of radical monotheism that if there is truly only one God, then he alone should be the object of our true fear. Then those who live in the fear of the Lord need live in fear of nothing else. Other objects of fear lose their divine power and their idolatrous grip. This is the testimony of the author of Psalm 34.
I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him,
and he delivers them.
Taste and see that the LORD is good;
blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
Fear the LORD, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing. (Ps 34:4, 7-9)
Or as Nahum Tate puts it, "Fear him, ye saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear.”
FEAR HIM, YE SAINTS, AND YOU WILL THEN HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO FEAR!!!
He answers His people. HE WILL NOT IGNORE HIS PEOPLE
He delivers His people. HE WILL NOT ALLOW HIS PEOPLE TO BE TAKEN CAPTIVE
He encamps around His people. HE SURROUNDS HIS PEOPLE
He is a refuge for His people. HE IS A SAFE SPACE FOR HIS PEOPLE
He provides for His people. HE IS THE PROVIDER FOR HIS PEOPLE
What does that tell me?
It tells me that there is nothing that can happen to His people that He doesn’t already have a plan in place and a victory secured.
What are you afraid of?
It ain’t bigger than Jesus.

Taste And See That The LORD is Good

Psalm 34:8-14
Psalm 34:8–14 CSB
Taste and see that the Lord is good. How happy is the person who takes refuge in him! You who are his holy ones, fear the Lord, for those who fear him lack nothing. 10 Young lions lack food and go hungry, but those who seek the Lord will not lack any good thing. 11 Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12 Who is someone who desires life, loving a long life to enjoy what is good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from deceitful speech. 14 Turn away from evil and do what is good; seek peace and pursue it.
Go ahead and try Jesus.
Go ahead and get a taste of His goodness and mercy.
Go ahead and get a taste of this deliverer and redeemer.
Go ahead and see.
Go ahead.
You won’t find another God like this God.
Go ahead.
You won’t find another deliverer like Jesus.
Go ahead.
You won’t find another King like Jesus.
Go ahead.
Taste and see.
You won’t regret it.
Happy is the person who tries Jesus.
God does not withhold any good thing from His people.
If it’s good and perfect for you God will provide it for you.
Listen, David says, children listen, in the fear of the LORD there is a filling, a fullness, a satisfaction that comes from feasting on the goodness of God that no other thing can bring.
We were created with an appetite, with a longing, with a hunger than can only be satisfied by the presence and person of Christ in our lives.
Taste and see. The LORD IS GOOD.
Turn from evil.
Do good.
Guard your tongue.
Pursue peace.
These are the platters of a life of Thanksgiving
Give folks a taste of this.

Adversity Respects No One

Psalm 34:15-21
Psalm 34:15–21 CSB
15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry for help. 16 The face of the Lord is set against those who do what is evil, to remove all memory of them from the earth. 17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit. 19 One who is righteous has many adversities, but the Lord rescues him from them all. 20 He protects all his bones; not one of them is broken. 21 Evil brings death to the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be punished.
Do you see this?
The LORD see those who are living out the righteousness of God.
That justice.
That peace.
That forgiveness.
That mercy.
That love of neighbor.
The LORD see those people who have allowed the Righteousness of God in Christ Jesus become our righteousness.
And He hears there cry for hep.
There is hope there but there also a reason for the need to have hope.
He hears our cries because we will still face adversity.
We will still be tempted and tried.
The adversary, the devil, will still lay traps for God’s people.
The devil will still scheme against the people of God.
David, the psalmist, says here that both the righteous and the wicked will face adversity.
The righteous are often broken-hearted.
The righteous are often crushed in spirit.
But the LORD is near to them
The LORD delivers them.
The LORD heals them
The wicked are often broken-hearted.
The wicked are often crushed in Spirit.
The difference between the wicked and the righteous is not their circumstance but their posture.
The wicked rebel against the rescue while the righteous run to the rescuer.
Evil brings death to the wicked.
But those who have put their hope in Jesus will be saved.
The wicked will be punished.
The righteous will not be punished.

Redeemer And Refuge

Psalm 34:22
Psalm 34:22 CSB
22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants, and all who take refuge in him will not be punished.
Here again is why we will bless the LORD at all times
He Redeems and gives refuge
He buys us back from the bondage of sin.
He gives us refuge from the master of sin.
He rewards and rescues.
The JESUS is worthy of all praise and Thanksgiving.
I will bless the LORD at all times. His praise will continually be on my lips!
