Matthew 18:4 ESV
4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Concept of humility we have to set aside ourselves… We have so many things we can see on facebook that tell us what the problem is… and we can look at the world and see THAT is the problem, but really if we want to save the world we have to see that we are the problem and we have to take control and move forward with that.
Stories… someone outside them selves to save them… .beauty and the beast… and the Gospel reminds us that we cant save ourselves, that we need someone to save us… and the God of the universe came and did that for us… but we need to become childlike to get into the kingdom… but we need to get rid of our pride… and its weird because kids dont really have humility, they dont sit their pride aside and think they should trust those in authority… have you talked to a teenager lately? You ahve to get a place where you feel small so he is great… where you realize that you arent actually in charge of anything… we have to realize our own frailty to be able to see your need and trust in Jesus.
Sets up vs 7
Matthew 18:7 ESV
7 “Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!
Temptations to sin we miss hamerteios means to miss the target… archery… shoot at target… miss the middle of the target… off the center of the target… and we are off perfect… so we miss the center of the target every day…Ecclesiastes better a funeral than a party… we think about it…
hammerteios… it just shows we arent a perfect father, husband, friend, and we are all in this room sinful, and thats why we needed a sinless savior… and if you think you dont have sin in your life, 1 John tells us we are a liar… and we actually need Jesus to come and die for us in our place...
The issue isnt so much that we sin against people, but we really sin against God. so its not that people just dont know about it, the thing is we actually sin against HIM, so that is the rough part… people dont have to know for the sin to hurt him...
Genesis 39:6–9 ESV
6 So he left all that he had in Joseph’s charge, and because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. 7 And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, because of me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge. 9 He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?”
Who does he say he would sin against… not my boss… not you.... even if no one else is looking, we would sin against GOD.... and thats the issue with us is we have sinned against a holy righteous great God.
Some wait until authority is sleeping… but he never sleeps… he knows it… he never quits looking… always sees it…he doesnt sleep… and you have to get to this place and he pushes on you and he tries to get you back to the right place and each day he gives you a new opportunity to be a good creation...

7 “Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes!

No matter what your view of him is that he is all love, there is some woe in him… he is against some things… he has some woe in him… who is this group of people that he has woe against....
So here is what he is saying.. we often talk about our own sin, and people that are sinning, but what he is saying, is its not just the people that sin, its not just those people its the people the tempt them to sin.... its the people who set the trap for those to sin, so the question, is how are we setting up people to sin… not just looking out and seeing people sin,.. the people who are also in trouble are teh ones who set the trap for people to sin… we rarely look at this
but how do we do this…we setup people to sin.... how do we do that.... the big one is sexually… while we are on vacation, I dont take pictures of my abs. it will cause you to stumble..... And I dont want to do this with women and set them up… where we become so law driven… we can get into this crazy world where we religiously come down on people....
Im not going to set out a lot of religious rules for you on what you should and shouldn’t wear… but I am going to point you at the one who should… ask the Holy Spirit… I already told you Im a mess I cant figure it out.. and here is why we as people will set out a list of rules of movies that people should and shouldn’t watch… we are too afraid that people wont listen to the spirit
The question is do we trust the holy spirit to speak to people.
THe question is are we culpable for the sin in other people.... sexuality is the easy one, we conservative Christians are really easy to push in on that...
What about greed? How do we make people more greedy and materialistic and sin? What do we talk about when we are together? how are we making people crave more money, more square footage.... and we have ot thinka bout that when we are posting all of these pictures about all of the things we are buying, we are making people covet our stuff we are responsible… and we dont think about that… but we are culpable for the sin in other people for the things we say or do.... and these are the things that bring me satisfaction.... and they look at our lives and say look this is what brings them joy its not JEsus and it makes them want to have more as well...
Not just the makers of the show… but you.... you didnt wake up thinking about it… but we did it… we think we didnt mean to do it so we cant be responsible, but thats what Jesus just blew up here..
HOw often do you work in how perfect your kids aare when you are out with your friends? THey are the most perfect little angels… making people covet it…
Now here is the complication of it and how serious it is....
Matthew 18:8 ESV
8 And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.
Hes talking hyperbolicly, this is how they talked back then, if he was literal wed all be blind… tou have to be like Joseph when pottifers wife showed up… you just run after it… who cares if you are naked.. its gotta be serious.
Don’t play around with it… cut it off… if you are hanging out with people that are talking about money all the time and they are making you more materialistic, you need to cut them off....
Matthew 18:9 ESV
9 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.
For all of us we are always moving toward either heaven or hell
Cs Lewis said this, “It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible Gods and goddesses, to remember the the dullest most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare.
All day long we are, in some degree helping each other to one or the other of these destinations. It is in light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all of our dealings with one another, all friends, all loves. all play, all politics.
There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. It is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, exploit -immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.”
Every moment we are helping people to one of these two destinations… and what Jesus just said is we are responsible for where we are pushing people… and this is contrary to our worldview.... the only person you are responsible to is you.... you are just responsible to you and the Lord… and Jesus is saying no no no… we are our brothers keeper… we are responsible for how we lead them… not their response.. hold on to that...
This is a warning text
Warning label.. im offended… Who cares… IM just telling you a fact...
We cant say we dont like this,,, he doesnt care… this is just what we should do… and we start to feel the burden of it… but we shouldn’t.... because what you see is he is moving toward the cross… and he paid for it… and you have to take the weight and let him have it.... he will forgive you....
