Jesus vs the Jews
Jesus vs the Jews
16 For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”
18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.
20 “For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel.
21 “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.
22 “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,
23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

16 For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
The Jews did not care about a man being healed. They only cared about the Sabbath law being broken.
So instead of rejoicing in the healing of the man. they are ready to harass, to set in motion the harassing of Jesus and His ministry.
V. 17
V. 17
17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”
Understanding that Jesus answered them. In the Text we don't see that the Jews didn’t say anything to Jesus for Him to answer.
In the Greek Jesus is saying, “My Father is is always working all the way up to now, I too am working”
lets not forget that although God completed His work of creation (Genesis 2) , God is still working with the redemption and with maintaining the creation
The Jews were upset about Jesus breaking the Sabbath rule.
Lets talk about the Sabbath
Lets talk about the Sabbath
In Genesis 2 , we are introduced to the Sabbath
God rested from His work on the 7th day.
look at something with me.
5 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
8 God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.
13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.
19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
now turn to Genesis 2:1-3
Genesis 2:1–3 (NASB95)
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts.
2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
Have you noticed something?
Have you noticed something?
God’s Rest, a rest that has not stopped
the 7th day does not say there was evening and morning.
God’s rest
God is still in that rest, even though He is always working.
So when God made the Law of the Sabbath being for rest, it was to represent the rest of God. It is designed to be closer with God, to celebrate the union that you have with Him.
God Rest is still active and Christ is that rest.
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.
9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.
We are not talking about a day we are talking about union.
When Jesus came. The Sabbath was not needed. For Christ was here for the union in God and man.
sabbath - until the real thing comes
Christ - the True Rest
STORY OF “JINGLE ALL THE WAY” (DOLL vs REAL THING)
When Jesus came, our rest came.
salvation comes from Him.
The Sabbath is no longer needed because we have union now with Christ.
So Why does Israel and others still follow it?
they don't believe that Jesus is the Messiah - others because of ignorance, or different Bible interpretation.
v. 17-18
v. 17-18
17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”
18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
The Jews wanted to kill Jesus for what He said.
The Jews knew very well what Jesus was talking about.
They looked at Jesus as speaking blasphemy.
The Jews’ view
The Jews’ view
for from the Jewish elite perspective:
They were serious about the name of God, So much that when writing a scroll, when it was time to write the name of God, they would wash there hands before writing it, and while writing they were not to be interrupted
Jesus broke the the Sabbath by healing
now he is saying that He is equal to God
these Jews were nervous about writing the name of God, but Jesus says he is equal to Him
They are mad because what Jesus is saying is 100% true.
Jesus Truth
Jesus Truth
8 “For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
He is Lord (master, authority) of the Sabbath (He is the Man)
they didn’t see it
**funny Film Director story**
Jesus is running the show
He is the “rest” of the Lord. He is Rest
And the Jews wanted to kill Him for it.
This is clear that these Jews do not have a high view of God, or the Word of God.
When Religion has become greater then Relationship.
V. 19-20
V. 19-20
What does this mean, when Jesus says “the Son can do nothing of Himself”
This does not mean that Jesus is useless, or unable to do anything. Jesus is placing Himself part of the Godhead.
We know that In John 1, it shares that In the beginning was the Word, with God and the Word was God… nothing was do without Him.
It’s clear the God’s word is from Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. nothing to do apart from Him, and Father, Son and Holy Spirit don't work solo of each other.
The union that Father, Son and Holy Spirit have with each other is eternal.
V. 21-22
V. 21-22
21 “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.
22 “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,
Jesus does two things here.
Jesus claims his power to gave life.
Jesus is Life and Jesus will give life. God the father gives life
2. Jesus claims His power in Judgement
Jesus shares here that not only is he equal to God. (because He is God, He is equal in action and works.
Jesus has the power to give life, and to Judge.
And because of this.........
V. 23
V. 23
23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
There is no different in us honoring God. If you dont honor Christ, you can not honor the father
Those who believe in God without Jesus? This isn't possible.
V. 24
V. 24
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
Jesus now shows that He is the Savior.
Jesus has the power to give life, at the same time has the power to judge. What hope do we have?
Can one pass from death into life?
When you make a cake - can you separate and restore the elements?
It is easier to do that then to pass from death into life.
WE can’t pass out o death into life, it would be like the cake
But through Jesus us believing in Him, we will have salvation and we pass out of death, nothing into life.
Jesus has all the power,
V.25
V.25
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
The blessing of salvation is here. the dead, (dead to union with God) (Dead in Sin) will hear the truth of God. Hear the word o Jesus and those who hear will live. (John 3:16)
26 “For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;
27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
