Thessalonica was a prominent city in Macedonia (in modern-day Greece) due to its location:
Paul was in Corinth, where he wrote two letters that we now call 1 and 2 Thessalonians, addressed to the newfound church in Thessalonica.
First Thessalonians is one of the first of Paul’s letters, or epistles, to churches.
Paul and Silas traveled to Thessalonica from Phillipi on Paul’s second missionary journey to preach the news about Jesus.
The gospel was preached but all didn’t receive
Acts 17:5–9 ESV
But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd. And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.” And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things. And when they had taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
Paul wrote the book of 1 Thessalonians to encourage them and to explain the “day of the Lord” more clearly.
Specific Commands for Life (5:12–22)

And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.
Be The Light - Be His Voice
Admonish the idle -
Admonish: to warn or counsel in terms of someone’s behavior.
Idle: disorderly adj. — not submitting to discipline and order; unruly.
Assignment - Help those who are on the wrong path
Encourage the fainthearted
Encourage: to comfort v. — to alleviate sorrow or distress; give emotional strength to.
Fainthearted: less hopeful or enthusiastic.
Help the weak
Help: to attend (manage) v. — to take charge of, manage, or deal with something or some situation.
Weak: (morally) adjs. — wanting in moral strength, courage, or will.
This greek word deals with our flesh
Matthew 26:41 ESV
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Romans 5:6 ESV
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
Don’t judge but HELP!
Be patient with them all
Patient: to be even-tempered while enduring trying circumstances.
Even-tempered: not easily annoyed or angered.
Everyone should be dealt with in patience.
“People work” can be frustrating at times.
We are all so different.
We mature at different rates, have different personalities and backgrounds, likes, dislikes, and habits.
These factors can make it complex and difficult when we are called on to warn, help, instruct, or encourage others.
Love is what helps us be patient with everyone.
1 Thessalonians 5:15 ESV
See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.
“But always seek to do good to one another and to everyone”
Seek: to pursue (activity) v. — to carry out or participate in an activity.
1 Thessalonians 5:16 ESV
Rejoice always,
Rejoice: to feel happiness or joy.
Always: at all times; all the time and on every occasion.
Wait!!!
Ecclesiastes 3:1–8 ESV
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
Christian joy is not bound by circumstances, hindered by difficulties, material things, relationship status but.....
Rejoicing is based on the fact that we are in Christ (5:18) [EBC, Hb, NIC, WBC],
That Christ is in us [ICC],
that we are saved [Lns, NCBC],
that we are forgiven,
That we are in His Rest
Rejoicing in not a season, It is a lifestyle!
Philippians 4:4 ESV
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV
pray without ceasing,
Ceasing: with unflagging resolve.
Unflagging: tireless; persistent.
In our prayer life we should be consistent and persistent!
We should never stop praying,
Think about prayer like our cell phone....
