Romans 1 KJV 1900
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end you may be established; That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Obedience to The Faith The Gospel, among all nations (Romans 1:5)
Romans 1:16 Gospel is God’s Power to Save to those who believe Jew First and then to Greek
Romans 1:17 for in It (the Gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith (always people we saved by faith)

Romans 2

Rom. 2:1-16 God shows no partiality

His judgement is according to Truth Rom 2:2

Rom. 2:7-11 Do good, good, do bad, wrath,

Rom. 2:17

Switches to Jews

Rom. 2:25 starts circumcision conversation

Rom. 2:28-29 READ

Dealing w problems from Acts 15
Big issue being dealt with in this book
Romans 3
Jews had a head start, they had the OT
Prior blessings, exactly what Romans 9 starts out with
Romans 3:9-10 Jews aren’t better than Gentiles/greeks, equal, no partiality 2:11 no partiality with God
God is righteous, people are not, we all sin, none is righteous in the ultimate sense
Romans 3:20-21 contrasts the Law of Moses with the Gospel
Romans 3:22 no difference
Romans 3:26 just and justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus
Romans 3:27-31 again contrasts the Gospel with Law of Moses
vs 29 Jews only? no gentiles also
30 by faith, both circumcised and un circumcised
vs 31 establish the purpose of the law,
Romans 4 – contrasting works Law of Moses and Gospel, in context, continuation, Paul hasn’t changed his entire thrust,
Compare Romans 4:2 and James 2:21
different types of works
Abraham was not justified by works of the Law of Moses
He was justified by works of faith, works of obedience, Rom. 1:5 obedience to the faith, Hebrews 5:9
compare Romans 4:5 and Acts 10:34-35
different contexts
here talking about works of the law of Moses, not faithful obedience
Romans 4:9-12
Read, this is saying exactly what Romans 2:28-29 was saying, Jew and Gentile are saved by faith, works of Law of Moses are not relevant
Romans 4:3 quotes Genesis 15:6
Read Romans 4:10
Abraham was saved before circumcision was invented, thus
listen Jews, you don’t need circumcision to be righteous before God, you need faith, get rid of these works of the Law of Moses which were temporary
Romans 4:13-25
13-17 to all, not just Jews, to all those who have faith, sons of Abraham

Gal. 3:8-9 parallel passages

Romans 5:1 Therefore, being justified by faith, --
both (Jew and Gentile)
what he has been discussing since Rom. 1:16 right?
5:8 reconciled, died for us while enemies of Christ, 5:9 justified by Christ’s blood
5:11 rejoice we’ve been reconciled
5:12-19 discusses Adam’s sin introduced spiritual death,
Romans 5:12
AS, THUS (SO) BECAUSE ALL SINNED
potentially, not automatically
Calvinism basically adds the idea of AUTOMATICALLY (results in universalism)
CURSE IS GREATER THAN THE CURE
Adam brought the curse
Christ brought the cure
5:17 much more powerful
Calvinism makes the curse more powerful than the Cure
Chapter 6
christians, stop sinning, you died to sin when you were baptized, you were raised to walk in newness of life

Rom. 6:6-7,11 don’t be a slave to sin, should be dead to sin

Rom. 6:14 connecting Rom. 5:20

Notice a pattern in the book, me genoito, NKJV, certainly not, KJV, God forbid, NASB May it never be, ESV By no means,

Rom. 6:1-2

Rom. 6:15-16

Rom. 3:4,6,31

Rom. 7:7,13

Rom. 9:14

Rom. 11:1

Called Me Genoito formula, 1st century rhetorical style, Epictetus in his discourses
One greek resource said it was one of the strongest statements in greek
used in Luke 20:16, 1 Cor. 6:15, Galatians 2:17, 3:21, 6:14
***interesting article but by Calvinist, botches the Romans 9 one on his top 10 list
https://expositorythoughts.wordpress.com/2008/02/25/the-ten-most-absurd-statements-in-the-book-of-romans/
Romans 7-8
Deals with freedom from the Law of Moses and how one could never keep it perfectly and that you were always reminded of your sins and Law of Christ, Gospel is what delivers one from that system that man could never keep perfectly.
Romans 9-11 Calvinism
Romans 9 discusses the same thing that’s been being discussed.
Romans 9 discusses how Israel had a head start, raised on the prophets and oracles predicting the Messiah, promise to Abraham, that Messiah came and now they reject Him, they thought it was unrighteous of God to reject them since they were God’s chosen people
Romans 9:6-13 Jacob I loved Esau I hated
speaking of the election of Israel to bring the Messiah, not individual salvation, completely out of context
Prove it look at Romans 11:28 the election is not individuals but the bringing of the Messiah

Rom. 9:14 Gods purpose of election was to bring the Messiah, if those people He used reject the Messiah, God can punish them and God is no unrighteous for doing so

Chapter 10 his wish for physical Israel would be that they are saved
Chapter 11:1 Has God cast away His people?
11:1-10 No Paul says I am a Jew, there is always a remnant
11:11-25 Israel’s rejection is not permanent, if they believe, they will be saved, Rom. 11:20,23
11:28
