I. A Prophet from God’s Grace, 1–7 II. A King in God’s Place, 8–14 III. A Man after God’s Heart, 15–31
Based on Judges and the strongest ungodly man in the Old Testament (Samson) and 1 Samuel, with perhaps the greatest godly man in history , we need to see in the Old Testament Testament this one simple truth:
The hero of every event in the Old Testament is God. Sometimes it’s God the Father, others it’s God the Son, Jesus Christ, and others it’s the Holy Spirit. But the triune God is always the hero. God is our refuge, our help, our protector, our provider, our hope. If you read the Bible and conclude that a person is the hero you need to keep reading. Scripture will always reveal the weaknesses and struggles of every person. God, however, is always the one who is able.
(1) The verse that changes our focus
1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
1Sam16:1-13 David is chosen
1 Samuel 13:14 ESV
But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
(2) The Savior who changes our lives
1Sam17:1-11 Goliath 17:45-47
Israel looked at the outward appearance, David looked to the Lord.
Who is the hero of your life?
