God had given the Israelites very specific instructions on how to deal with leprosy and other skin infections (Leviticus 13).
Anyone suspected of having this disease had to go to a priest for examination (Leviticus 13:2-3).
If found to be infected, “the leprous person who has the disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head hang loose, and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean.’
He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease.
He is unclean. He shall live alone. His dwelling shall be outside the camp” (Leviticus 13:45-46).
The leper then was considered utterly unclean—physically and spiritually.
The main symptom of leprosy is disfiguring skin sores, lumps, or bumps that don't go away after several weeks or months.
The skin sores are pale-colored. Nerve damage can lead to: Loss of feeling in the arms and legs
On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed.
Who stood at a distance…
Lifted up their voices -
Master, have mercy on us -
They had a need
They needed to be healed
It was a physical / External need
When there is a need your voice will be lifted!
“Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed.
Cleansed: to be healed ⇔ be cleansed v. — to be or become healed of a disease that renders one ceremonially unclean; conceived of as being washed or cleansed.
These men had faith…
They heard his word and acted upon it.
They had a physical need that effective their external look
Ofter times we have faith that is connected to the external
Job
Car
House
Relationship
Relocation
Something physical
Something tangible
Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice;
One of them!
When he saw that he was healed…
He saw....
When we are obedient…
Things will be begin to manifest
Can you see (personally)
But… He turned back…
He reversed direction; he returned to thank Jesus.
He did not seek a private session to say thank you.
Praising God with a loud voice…
He screamed praise and thanksgiving to God so everyone could hear…
Don’t tell me you don’t have a loud voice
And don’t tell me it doesn’t take all that....
If I can cry out for help
Don’t think that I can’t out to say thank you
and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.
He fell on his face at Jesus feet
His Faith moved from External to Internal
It moved from wanting the gifts
To wanting the giver
It showed his humility [TNTC].
It was an act of submission to Jesus’ authority and an act of reverence
Giving Thanks: to thank v. — to express gratitude or show appreciation to (someone).
He was a Samaritan…
He was already looked down upon
He was already dealing bitterness and hatred
The healing for him was much more than a physical act
Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”
Where are the nine - Where is the person who believed me for:
The house
The Car
The Job
The healing
“was no one found to return and give praise to God.”
So often, once people have got what they want, they never come back…
And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”
Rise and go your way!
But he never made it to the priest....
Because he has an encounter with the great high priest...
Your faith to cry out was for the healing
but your faith to return in praise and thanksgiving
Recognized who was the source of the healing
It was an internal moment
There is a spiritual healing that comes from gratefulness.
“your faith has made you well”
Well: to heal ⇔ save v. — to heal, conceived of rescuing or delivering person from imprisonment or other afflictions.
