Importunity – (Prayer is Invading the Impossible, pg.66)
Luke 11:1-13
Importunity – Asking with BOLDNESS
8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
Importunity – the act of frequently making the same request with urgency of need; (you’re in a panic and won’t stop asking until you get what you perceive to be a dire need). It’s a must have versus a “I want this.”
In this parable we see such a need as to cause one to abandon normal protocol. “I don’t care that it’s midnight, I must have…”
This is a prayer (request) of shameless boldness more so than one of persistence, like we have been taught to believe.
Persistence would be more in line with coming back every hour until, out of frustration, the friend renders that which has been requested.
We cannot pester God into answering our prayer, however our boldness, which is a blood purchased privilege, displays our faith in God as our Father to which He desires to reward.
Now that doesn’t mean that GOD will go against His nature or against His will.
There are times of prayer where we must learn to:
· Our Father, which are in heaven – is always available.
· ASK, SEEK, KNOCK – it all begins with “asking”
· Ask with boldness – it’s our privilege
o Hebrews 4:16; 13:6
So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
o Don’t be hesitant in your asking – we are instructed to ASK.
Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; is an act of Discipline not one of persistence. (The parable itself, again, is one of boldness).
