1 Thes. 5:16-19
1 Thes. 5:16-19
1 Thessalonians 5:16 (ESV)
Rejoice always,
pray without ceasing,
give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Do not quench the Spirit.
Rejoice always
—> why?
—> suffering in 1:6, 2:14, 3:2
And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit,
1 Thes 2:14 “For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews,”
1 Thes 3:2 “and we sent Timothy, our brother and God’s coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith,”
The Wesleyan Bible Commentary, Volume 5: Romans–Philemon 3. Prayer, Praise, and Precept (5:16–22)
At the heart of this movement is a gospel and a dynamic that not only save a man from sin, but also enable him to rejoice in the midst of persecution, sorrow, and death.
Pray without ceasing
—> why?
The Wesleyan Bible Commentary, Volume 5: Romans–Philemon 3. Prayer, Praise, and Precept (5:16–22)
A faith that enables a man to rejoice in the midst of prolonged suffering, to sing in prison (Acts 16:25), can be sustained only through constant fellowship with God. If men are to rejoice at all times they must pray without ceasing.
The Wesleyan Bible Commentary, Volume 5: Romans–Philemon 3. Prayer, Praise, and Precept (5:16–22)
Chrysostom declares: “The way to constant joy in the midst of persecution is constant prayer, unuttered or expressed.”
Give thanks in all circumstances
—> why?
All circumstances.
It is easy to give thanks in some circumstances but to give thanks in all circumstances requires a different mindset, a higher mindset.
—> I was thinking about this and it made me think of how I pray with our girls. It is always in an attitude of thanks but I never mention the hard parts of the day.
