Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker
An 87 year old woman is awaken by a noise in her kitchen.
She gets out of bed and quietly walks out to see what the noise is and discovers a burglar rummaging through her kitchen drawers.
Not knowing what to do, she loudly calls out a Bible verse.
She says, “Acts 2:38!”
The burglar freezes and doesn’t make another move until the police come and arrest him.
The arresting officer is amazed that an 87 year old woman could keep the burglar at bay with just a Bible verse.
He ask the burglar what about Bible verse stopped him in his tracks.
The Burglar replied, “Bible verse, what Bible verse, I thought the lady said she had an ax and two 38’s.”
Introduction
Thank you for your prayers.
They have gotten Valerie, Buddy, Kim and I through a very difficult couple of weeks.
Valerie is doing much better.
She is still on the vent, but is writing to us the things she has to say.
They moved her vent setting to 45.
More than one person has said to me, “I don’t know how you are so calm in all of this?”
It is not me, It is God!
Your prayers, your thoughts, your expressions of love have helped Kim and I weather this storm.
God spoke to my heart on the very first day and convicted me that I needed to face this moment and live out what I have told others at the bedside, in sermons and in counseling.
The good news is that Faith works, prayer works, the Bible is true, God is Able.
Throughout 2021 we have been engaged in the 2021 Bible Memory Challenge.
Our text this week comes from 1 Thessalonians 5:18
I want to look at 3 truths from this passage that this Thanksgiving we help carry you and your family through the toughest of times.
In Everything
Notice that it says In Everything, not for everything.
You cannot give thanks for everything.
You are not stupid.
Everything is not good.
War is not good, rape is not good, pain is not good, heartbreak is not good, sin is not good.
There are a lot of things we are not thankful for.
But we can be thankful in all things.
There is a time for everything.
We are all going to have Good things happen.
The Birth of child, Graduating from School, getting a job, getting married.
But we are also going to have bad things happen things break, accidents happen, people make mistakes, people we love die.
Give Thanks
We were talking about Thanksgiving dinner the other day.
And I told my son about eating Swanson Turkey TV Dinners for thanksgiving as a kid.
My mom had triple by-pass heart surgery when I was 12 years old.
So it was difficult many times to have a traditional Turkey dinner and we on several occasions had TV Dinners.
God’s Will
Is it God’s will that people should die, that war should happen, that people should be abused, raped, murdered.
Is Evil God’s will?
I do not believe that evil is God’s will.
Sin was not God’s will, death is not God’s will.
Repentance is God’s will, faith is God’s will.
Thanksgiving is God’s will.
Conclusion
How can I be thankful in the midst of heartbreak and tragedy?
Come to God
