1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
What is it to be Pentecostal?
Pretty new concept.
Roots go back to the ancient Jewish feast, The Feast of First Fruits or The Feast of Pentecost.
It was a celebration of Gods blessing and provision.
Falling on the 50th day after the Passover.
But for us, it is a little different.
It is the birthday of the Church!
We read the birth moment in our text.
120 people were filled with the Holy Ghost
Because of the erratic behavior of the 120 when this happened, people gathered around, trying to figure out what was taking place.
Peter would preach to them the first Pentecostal message.
Tied the OT prophecies to what was happening in that moment.
Many people would then be filled with the Holy Ghost and Baptized in Jesus Name
The Pentecostal Church was born
What is Pentecost?

First Key Doctrine:
Our Very Present Help In Time Of Trouble: God with Us
Today’s christian world looks at things from the bible and explains the reason why they are not experiencing those things today and “It’s just not for us today”.
8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
This means if it is in the bible, then we should be experiencing it!
18th century philosopher William Paley taught natural theology.
If you found a watch on the road, it had to have a maker, designer.
If that was true of a lost watch, then it was even more true for the world.
The world had to have a maker.
While that is very true, God is more than the world’s maker.
Intimately involved in our lives
Not just an absentee landlord
Not created out there somewhere
BUT
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: And there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
God is actively engaged in our lives!
The more we open to Him, the more he will be in our lives!
How do we encounter Him in our lives?
Revelation
God is not playing some weird game of Where’s Waldo with you!
27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
The primary revelation of God is Jesus Christ!
Who is Jesus?
Born in Judea (province, region or “state” in Israel) in the city of Bethlehem
Grew of in Nazareth of Galilee (another city in another region of Israel)
About 30 yrs of age he begins to teach and perform miracles
3.5 yrs later he would be crucified
3 days later would raise from the dead
Spend time with his followers before ascending into heaven
1 Cor 15 tells us that as Jesus rose from the dead, we will also rise in the rapture!
Our knowledge of Jesus comes from the Bible.
Key insights into God.
Who and What he is
When he will act
Why he acts and reacts like he does
Ultimate Where we will spend eternity based on how we respond to who, what, when and why he is what he is!
Our greatest encounter with God is through his Word!
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
We encounter God through His Word!
Yes, we see him everywhere including nature (if you will open your eyes to see Him).
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Just like you learn about the artist by studying their work
We learn about God by studying His work!
BUT we can never forget that in all the beauty of God’s handiwork, sin has caused ugly stains to ruin the canvas of God’s creation!
God reveals himself in personal encounters.
Adam and Eve
Noah
Abraham
Jacob
Paul
John
If God is unchangeable, he still wants to meet with you on a personal level!
That is why he wants to live in you!
The Indwelling of the Spirit
The Spirit of God recreates us and actively directs our lives.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Why is the Spirit compared to spirits; being drunk?
Intoxicating drink alters the thoughts and actions of the person under its influence!
When you have the Spirit in you, it affects you!
God is a supernatural God
Super natural: Beyond what is natural
Miracles
God’s power is beyond what is natural to us.
Look at the expectations of the early church
29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,
9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.
10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.
11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.
How do miracles happen?
Shed blood of Jesus
The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus makes it ALL possible
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.
28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
2. Faith
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
2. In the Name of Jesus
a. MUST be done in the Name of Jesus or by the authority or power of the Name of Jesus
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Call for the Elders
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
The church began in miracles and when the end comes, there will be miracles!
If you are filled with the Spirit, miracles should be a part of our lives!
Conclusion:
God is more than a teacher of morality.
God is more than a dispenser of decrees.
God wants to be intimately involved in our lives.
Leading us.
Counseling us.
Walking with us.
1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
