1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness,
2 in the hope of eternal life that God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.
3 In his own time he has revealed his word in the preaching with which I was entrusted by the command of God our Savior:

These apostles were specifically appointed by Jesus himself in the flesh!

Witnessed Jesus’ death and Resurrection...
Witnessed to the Ascended Lord...
Appointed specially by Jesus!
To preach and spread The Gospel...
Would raise up a pastor for them...

Would have that pastor appoint Elders and lead them...

7 As an overseer of God’s household, he must be blameless, not arrogant, not hot-tempered, not an excessive drinker, not a bully, not greedy for money,
8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, righteous, holy, self-controlled,
9 holding to the faithful message as taught, so that he will be able both to encourage with sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it.

righteous

11 It is necessary to silence them; they are ruining entire households by teaching what they shouldn’t in order to get money dishonestly.
12 One of their very own prophets said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
13 This testimony is true. For this reason, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith
14 and may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands of people who reject the truth.

For there are many rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially those from the circumcision party. 11 It is necessary to silence them; they are ruining entire households by teaching what they shouldn’t in order to get money dishonestly.
Humans have the capacity to be notoriously terrible and evil!
Apparently the Cretans had a particular gift for this as well as a terrible reputation!
12 One of their very own prophets said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
13 This testimony is true. For this reason, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith 14 and may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands of people who reject the truth.
Alternatively, we combat this by being more like Jesus!
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.
4 Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.
5 Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus,
6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited.
7 Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man,
8 he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even to death on a cross.
1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.
2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

2. This is the spiritual battlefield for the believer...
a. The Devil uses people, unbeliever and nominal believers, to attack people.
b. but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience are defiled. 16 They claim to know
