Intro:

Titus 1:1–4 CSB
1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness, 2 in the hope of eternal life that God, who cannot lie, promised before time began. 3 In his own time he has revealed his word in the preaching with which I was entrusted by the command of God our Savior: 4 To Titus, my true son in our common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Point #1: Again We See the Form of Letter Writing in the Ancient Near East in the First Century.

Author: Paul Identifies himself as the author of this letter...
Office: Paul shares his office of Apostle of Jesus Christ, the authority under which he functions and writes...
He writes to God’s elect that have faith...
He wants them to have knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness!
He wants their hope to be in eternal life promised by God before time began...
God can not lie!
Means of Communication: Paul shares this through preaching...
A gospel that Jesus entrusted Paul
by the command of God our Savior!
Audience: Paul identifies his audience…Titus
His true son in their common faith..
Blessing: Paul blesses Titus saying, “Grace and peace”, Paul longs for God’s very best for Titus’ life.
A grace and peace that comes from and through God and their Saviour Jesus Christ!
Titus 1:5 CSB
5 The reason I left you in Crete was to set right what was left undone and, as I directed you, to appoint elders in every town.

Point #2: Paul Sent Titus to Pastor This Church and to Train and Put Elders in Place!

This was Paul’s process...
Paul planted a church as an Apostle...
An Apostles was one “sent out” to preach the Gospel...
These apostles were specifically appointed by Jesus himself in the flesh!
To be an Apostle you had to… (Acts 1:21-22)
Was among the disciples from the time of John’s baptism
Witnessed Jesus’ death and Resurrection...
Witnessed to the Ascended Lord...
Appointed specially by Jesus!
To preach and spread The Gospel...
Would raise up a pastor for them...
Would send them a pastor...
Would have that pastor appoint Elders and lead them...
to set right what was left undone.

Titus 1:6–9 CSB
6 An elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, with faithful children who are not accused of wildness or rebellion. 7 As an overseer of God’s household, he must be blameless, not arrogant, not hot-tempered, not an excessive drinker, not a bully, not greedy for money, 8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, righteous, holy, self-controlled, 9 holding to the faithful message as taught, so that he will be able both to encourage with sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it.

Point #3: Paul Shares the Qualifications for Biblical Leadership in the Church.

Titus 1:10–14 CSB
10 For there are many rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially those from the circumcision party. 11 It is necessary to silence them; they are ruining entire households by teaching what they shouldn’t in order to get money dishonestly. 12 One of their very own prophets said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. For this reason, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith 14 and may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands of people who reject the truth.

Point #4: There Are Problems Everywhere, But Paul is Particularly Honest About the Cretans, He Doesn’t Candy Coast Titus’ Circumstances!

For there are many rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially those from the circumcision party. 11 It is necessary to silence them; they are ruining entire households by teaching what they shouldn’t in order to get money dishonestly.
Humans have the capacity to be notoriously terrible and evil!
Apparently the Cretans had a particular gift for this as well as a terrible reputation!
12 One of their very own prophets said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
13 This testimony is true. For this reason, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith 14 and may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands of people who reject the truth.
Alternatively, we combat this by being more like Jesus!
Philippians 2:3–8 CSB
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. 4 Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others. 5 Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. 7 Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, 8 he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even to death on a cross.
Romans 12:1–2 CSB
1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Titus 1:15–16 CSB
15 To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience are defiled. 16 They claim to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

Point #5: To the Pure, Everything is Pure!

How are we pure?
Matthew 5:8 CSB
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
a. Seeing God makes us pure, being with God makes us pure...
i. Being transformed by God allows us to see the best in others!
2. This is the spiritual battlefield for the believer...
a. The Devil uses people, unbeliever and nominal believers, to attack people.
b. but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience are defiled. 16 They claim to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.
