Guidelines for the New Man

In our last lesson on V 1-5 We saw that we were raised with Christ from dead life to a living hope in Christ. We are to seek the things above, Set Our minds on things above, Hide our selves in Christ and we will be glorified in and with Him. Verse 5 begins with “THEREFORE”

I WE MUST PUT TO DEATH SOME THINGS V5-7

1. This is rather harsh. The old KJV says “MORTIFY” when a body dies it goes into rigor mortis.

a. Fornication- Sexual sin 1 Cor 6:9-10 (Tells us how serious this sin is)

b. Uncleanness- Moral Impurity Often linked to immorality

c. Passions- (KJV Inordinate affections) This is an inward sin (NIV LUST) Rom 1:26 Vile passions.

d. Evil Desire- 2 Sam 13:1-22 Story of Amnon and Tamar (Passion to Evil Desire)

e. Covetousness- Idolatry “The desire for more” Greed Placing things before our desire for God make them an idol.

2. WHY THESE THINGS ARE IMPROPER V6-7

a. V6 Because God’s wrath against sin is in complete agreement with His nature

b. V7 They formerly believed that Life and happiness were bound up in these things but now have learned that true happiness comes from living in the light of God’s word.

II THINGS THAT MUST BE PUT OFF (AWAY) V8-11

1. These are sins of attitude and speech James 3

a. Anger- P505 of truth commentary.

b. Wrath- perhaps a boiling up of anger leading to improper action.

c. Malice- EVIL Vicious Disposition set on causing evil to a person

d. Blasphemy- Speech directed against the good reputation of another. Against God and Gods name Rev 13:6, Gods word Titus 2:5, Against God’s people Eph 4:31

e. Filthy Language- (Foul Mouthed Abuse)

i. Geo Wash “The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing is a vice so mean and low that every person of sense and character detests and despises it.”

f. Lie To one another- Lying to or about one another. Eph 4:25

2. Why are these Improper

a. You have put off the old man Matt 9:16-17

b. You have put on the new man. Mt 9:16, Eph 2:10

c. Being renewed in His knowledge.

d. Being made in His image. 1 Pet 1:15

e. Because in Christ all are equal.

When the Feeling of Salvation Fails Us

“Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior” (Titus 1:1-3).

FEELINGS ARE IMPORTANT, BUT THEY ARE NOT INFALLIBLE. If our feelings are based on erroneous thoughts, those feelings will be inappropriate. So the constant challenge in life is to make sure our thoughts (and our actions) are based on truth and not on fiction.

As indicated in the text above, the hope of eternal life rests on the promise of God. (What Paul says about it is similar to what Peter said in 1 Peter 1:3-5.) And dependence on God’s promise is the main component of faith — the decision to trust His promise.

Since life can be a hard business, there are times when we won’t “feel” forgiven. What should we do at such times? We should go back to the Scriptures. It is only in the Scriptures that we will find a dependable, objective assessment of our relationship to the Lord.

Looking into the Scriptures, we may find that having accepted God’s salvation on His terms, our hope in Him is well-founded. Despite our feelings, we must count on the dependability of what God has said.

But looking into the Scriptures, we may find that we are not, in fact, in a right relationship with the Lord. In that case, we need to repent and seek His forgiveness. When Paul said, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith” (2 Corinthians 13:5), he raised the possibility that some of his brethren in Corinth might not have as secure a relationship with Christ as they thought they had.

Either way, the Scriptures need to be our guide. Our feelings may err on the high side or the low side, but the only reliable basis for our confidence is God’s promise. And never forget: the only thing we know about God’s promise is what we find in the Scriptures.
