The Lord's Prayer (6)

Matthew 6:13 ESV

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

God can’t tempt us!

By God’s nature there are things God cannot do.

God is immutable, meaning he cannot change. If he could change it would mean he could become better. But God is perfect and you cannot make perfection better.

James 1:12 ESV

12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

When we endure temptation we are blessed and rewarded.

You endure through Trust in God

James 1:13–14 ESV

13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

When we are enticed by our own desires, Satan uses that open door to entice us lure us further.

Satan is the tempter.

Matthew 4:3 ESV

3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Tempter=Satan

1 Thessalonians 3:5 ESV

5 For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.

Lead us not into temptation

James 1:2–3 ESV

2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

The word trials is the same greek word used in temptation. God cannot tempt us but he can lead us into trials.

Matthew 4:1 ESV

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Te Spirit lead Jesus into a trial: why

To strenghten Jesus

For our test- God led hm to succeed

Hebrews 2:18 ESV

18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Deuteronomy 8:16 ESV

16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.

If God leads you into a trial it is for your good

God will deliver you

1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV

13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

2 Timothy 4:18 ESV

18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

2 Peter 2:9 ESV

9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,

If the Lord’s prayer is the model in which we should pray than our prayer should include Protection from temptation and Successes in the face of trial.

Psalm 119:133 ESV

133 Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me.

John 17:15 ESV

15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.
