1. We receive power to be a witness.
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be [c]witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 NKJV
· You have the Holy Spirit within you when you're born again. He is there for you. This verse says He comes on you to be a witness.
· He is In you for you, He is on you for others.
2. We speak directly to God.
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God... 1 Cor 14:2a
3. We speak out mysteries.
...for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 1 Cor 14:2b
4. He helps us pray when we don’t know how.
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27
5. Praying in tongues builds us up.
He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, 1 Cor 14:4a
Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of [f]God. Ephesians 5:17-21
6. Praying in tongues will build up our faith.
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. Jude 20
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Rom 10:17
7. Our spirit prays.
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays... 1 Cor 14:14
8. We give thanks well.
For you indeed give thanks well... 1 Cor 14:17
9. Tongues are a sign to unbelievers.
Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers. 1 Cor 14:22
