MESSAGE: WHAT TO DO WITH SIN?
MESSAGE: WHAT TO DO WITH SIN?
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Today we are talking about SIN
What is sin?
MEANS MISSING THE MARK OF THE GLORY OF GOD
WE LIVE IN A WORLD WHOS BIGGEST PROBLEM IS SIN
SO WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT
LETS GET A HEALTHY PERSPECTIVE OF SIN.
Prayer
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
Practice - To bear or to wear sin. - Puts sin upon their own shoulders
We were not made to carry sin… We were born into it , but humans originally were made to not carry sin.
BUT WE HAVE BECOME A SLAVE TO IT
STORY - Hacking Computers
I remember when I was younger I almost got kicked out of Highschool a week before graduating because of a stupid mistake.
NOTHING MAJOR, I just hacked into the school mainframe (things sound cooler when you use the word mainframe when talking about technology)
Created a master account, disabled the internet filter system, monitored the webcams of my classmates and deleted all of their final assignments… NOTHING MAJOR!
Cops came in
I was terrified - I have been found out!
It started small… and it grew and grew and grew.
Started as something I enjoyed and became something I was afraid that people were going to find out.
SIN IS THE SAME WAY!
Starts small, usually with different intentions…
Our natural instinct is to HIDE the sin
HIDING SIN LEADS TO THE FEAR OF BEING FOUND OUT
RULED BY FEAR
RULED BY SIN
WE WORK FROM FEAR TO HIDE SIN
IN OTHER WORDS WE ARE WORKING FOR SIN
THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND OUR ACTIONS IS SIN
AND IN TURN ARE A SLAVE TO SIN
YOU WITH ME?
THAT is what it means to be a SLAVE to sin.
ITS MESSED UP,
AND YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT
BECAUSE WE ALL DO IT.
It’s what we has humans now since the fall is our nature.
Bible calls it our SIN NATURE
IF THAT IS WHAT WE NATURALLY DO WITH SIN.
WHAT DO I DO WITH SIN?
POINT ONE: REALIZE - THAT WE HAVE IT
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Paul - best Christian leader, talked about his sin ALL THE TIME!
Sinned the most!
WE HAVE TO REALIZE THAT WE ARE SINNERS
ITS LIKE WHEN YOU REALIZE YOU ARE SICK
You cant take the answer, without the realization of sin
You are going to do damage to yourself, and not only that to those around you.
To reject the sin in your life is to reject the grace God in your life.
THERE IS NO REDEMTION IF THERE IS NOTHING TO REDEEM FROM.
The realization of sin is healthy…
That is why God gave us the law, the rules we are not supposed to break.
it shows how far we are from God
Two things about realizing our sin
WE ARE ALL SINNERS - born into Sin
We can not fix our SIN - BUT IT DOESNT STOP US FROM TRYING!!!
“THIS IS REAL ENCOURAGING AARON” - We‘re dooomed…
You have a choice when you realize you have sin
Accept Grace
Work to distance yourself from sin.
What is in the driver seat when you are working to get away from sin?
SIN
“I HAVE TO MAKE MYSELF GOOD ENOUGH FOR GOD”
You are going to be working your whole life.
Shift our focus as a church from protecting from sin, to proclaiming JESUS!
Oswald Chambers
”We have to realize that we cannot earn or win anything from God; we must either receive it as a gift or do without it.”
Point Two: REPENT - GET IT OUT THERE
Paul wrote a letter to the Corinthians, telling them some hard things…
For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Sometimes when we are hurting we need some hydrogen peroxide
Paul brought in some discipline.
For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while. As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.
For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
Paul brought to their attention, things that were not Good… I mean like really not Good. The Corinthians were messed up.
And they had a choice…
Reject or Repent
We have that same choice… REPENTANCE WHICH LEADS TO SALVATION
That is what it looks like to recieve Jesus… To fully turn to him, its realizing that we are not perfect, repenting, and turning to his perfect Grace
POINT THREE: RECEIVE GRACE
CORN HOLE
Our life is like a corn hole tournament
That we have shown up to
And found out that someone else played the game for us. Sank every single bean bag
Got the trophy stating that they were the best dang corn holer and then gave it to us.
But here’s the thing we are still playing our game
And we go through this game, through life missing our shots… Missing the mark… SINNING
Beating ourselves up about every shot that we have missed… in the past, currently missed or think that we are going to miss in the future…
BUT HERE IS THE TRUTH - WE HAVE ALREADY GOT THE TROPHY!
WE HAVE ALREADY WON THE GAME!
WE DONT HAVE TO WORK FOR THE TROPHY, WE GET TO RECEIVE THE TROPHY
WE DONT HAVE TO WORK FOR GRACE, WE GET TO RECEIVE GRACE!!!
So does that mean I get to intentionally check out and miss every shot then?
So does that mean that I get to sin all I want?
Giving up the game is not fulfilling who God has called you to be!
The trophy says you are the best dang cornholer ever
His grace says that you are called to something.
And its the difference of working FOR his grace
And working FROM his grace.
He has called me to be the best dang cornholler there ever was?
I am going to our of the thankfulness of how he sees me, out of the trophy I have received, take the best dang shots I can take, because that is who he has called me to be. And if I miss, I’m going to pick it up, make a note, and move on.
PRESSURES OFF!
Woman in Adultery
Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” ]]
Accept the grace, and out of that revelation SIN no more.
She could have turned around and went back to that man?
Do you think she did though?
NO BECAUSE SHE KNEW GRACE AND WHAT GRACE HAD CALLED HER TO
When you accept it leads to action
Romans 8:5–11 (ESV)
5 For those who live according to the flesh (WHO DONT HAVE JESUS) set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit (BELIEVE IN JESUS - THEN) set their minds on the things of the Spirit. (FIRST ACCEPTANCE OF LIFE OF THE SPIRIT THEN they set their minds on Jesus)
6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death (to not have Jesus), but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. (IF YOU TRY TO BE A GOOD CHRISTIAN, WITHOUT JESUS, IT DOES NOT WORK) 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 You, however, (BEST PART) are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, (WE MAKE MISTAKES) the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Light on sin? HEAVY ON JESUS.
Nathan Finochio Video
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
To answer the question what do we do with Sin?
We realize it
We repent from it
We accept grace - AKA LET JESUS DEAL WITH IT
For those that have Jesus, we get to accept grace when we mess up.
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
We all still try to do it on our own
Maybe you’re here tonight and you have been
Trying to do it on your own
Turn to receive grace

Which Battles Should I Fight?
Which Battles Should I Fight?
Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.
Now When Jesus learned - The Power of the Attention of God
He knew all, but what was significant was when it was brought to his attention. - What are we bringing to his attention?
The attention of God is one of the most valuable things. We have his attention.
Come and listen, all you who fear God,
and I will tell you what he did for me.
For I cried out to him for help,
praising him as I spoke.
If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
But God did listen!
He paid attention to my prayer.
Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer
or withdraw his unfailing love from me.
Just like Micah has my attention when I am looking after her. If she wants it, I am there.
The word LEARNED (Greek: Egno)
Means to know or to fully acknowledge
“Now when Jesus learned (acknowledged, turned his attention to) that”
There came a time when that took his attention, he could not focus on everything, just like he was restrained to one location with his physical body, he was restrained with his focus
Story
I may know that my daughter has the veggie straws… BUT it does not have my full attention until it became a problem, Until she ate too much, or until there needed to be change.
What are you doing with the attention of your Father? What are you doing with the attention of Jesus.
He is focused on you, are you focused on him.
I can be focused on my daughter when she has the veggie straws, but if she does not heed my attention, she will not change. Here is the thing, we go through our life with the attention of God on us but our attention is on anything but. Do you really want to face your father?? Because you KNOW that if you do, you may loose those veggie straws that you have grown to like? But what will you gain? A father that knows what you need and will do anything to provide it.
We need to heed the correction of a loving father, it is not to tear you down, it is to build you up.
Our world is saying don’t disagree with me or else I will change what I believe in.
It’s like a kid changing the rules of the game when he or she is loosing.
Correction is there for your betterment.
Pharisees had heard - Gossip, and accusations without truth
When they HEARD, not when they SAW, when they EXPERIANCD, when they WITNESS, when they HEARD.
Seeing something is powerful because it means that you were there.
But they found out from others
Not on their own accord or account but others
Think about how quick they were to jump to accusations. How different would it had been if they went to JESUS to find out if it was true?
Too many of us point AT Jesus instead of pointing TO Jesus
Who were they listening to? Most likely the people that were effected by Jesus
Think about how discouraging that could have been to them?
To find out the truth we need to go to the source
Jesus was making and baptizing - Moving the kingdom forward
More Disciples than John - It became an issue when it became more than. (Popularity/Threatening thoughts)
Jesus himself did not baptize - They Didn’t even have the facts right - DEFENSE
HE LEFT - Where are you spending your energy? He only had so much, it needed to be directed.
And departed again For Galilee - He returned to what was familiar, Where he was wanted and needed, sometimes the place we need to be sharing the gospel is where we are wanted and needed.
For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Oswald Chambers Nov 28
We have to realize that we cannot earn or win anything from God; we must either receive it as a gift or do without it.
Grace is relieved accepted
Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
the law was made to make people righteous and to make the aware of their sin - but Christ came to BE righteous and to concur sin
all have sin -takes awareness
all have grace - takes acceptance
Fully accepting GRACE looks like putting the things that once were, behind you! EVEN WHEN YOU MESS UP, striving on towards the Goal.
RECIEVING GRACE TAKE AWARENESS OF SIN, AND ACCEPTANCE OF GRACE.
The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
obey - apĕithĕō - to have a lack of interest - we get the word apathy from this word.
Apathy - ehhh I just don’t care - lack of interest.
status - getting their importance from what they were doing. John’s talking about doing less for yourself and more for Jesus.
Discipline
Hurts - Hydrogin Proxide
Heals
Improves
Helps
Romans 8 .
John 8 .
I AM GUILTY
Hacking into Computers at a young age
They knew it was me
They could have destroyed me
They knew that I was this innocent church kid
Because of who I was, they let me off the hook.
So many of us are walking around Claiming sin that has already healed.
Feeling guilty, but not realizing that you have been cleansed by Jesus.
We are not condemned...
As a RESULT… We set our minds on Jesus
Let the thankfulness of a resurrection life in us, lead to us setting our minds on JESUS
Skiing - Turning before you are moving, does nothing, it just exaughts you.
Too many people in the church exaughsting themselves doing instead of accepting.
What God sees on the judgment day in you is Jesus
Sin
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Condemnation
Grace
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Oswald Chambers
”We have to realize that we cannot earn or win anything from God; we must either receive it as a gift or do without it.”
OUR WORKS ARE A REACTION OF HIS GRACE.
You don’t try to follow Christ and then receive grace, we follow Jesus BECAUSE we received grace.
When God looks at your spirit, we often think he sees our sin… HE SEES HIS SON!
God will condem sin, on the last day, he will right the wrongs of sin, he is coming back with a vengeance, but the last day for ChristIans is not a day of blood spilt, it is a day of celebration, because when God looks at you, he sees his Son.
The FREE GIFT that we have received.
SO THEN DOES THAT MEAN WE CAN KEEP SINNING?
NO on the contrary! Because the result of the spirit of God in you is putting the flesh to death.
Looking at Paul,
In the church we hide our sin...
Get it out there,
We often think that if people knew my sin… I would be less than…
GOOD!
STORY OF JOHN
John the Baptist - Disciples come up angry that Jesus is baptising more people.
Afraid that they will be less than.
John GOES IN!
THE CHURCH DOESNT NEED PERFECT PEOPLE
IF YOU THINK YOU ARE PERFECT - YOU ARE PROUD
AND GOD OPPOSES THE PROUD
And GRACES the humble.
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
