The Greatest Gift

John 1:14 NASB95
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Who is the Word?
the Person and subject in John 1:1-5
Word = Logos is a person
In relation to God - He existed eternally, He was with God, He is God,
In relation to the World - He is the creator and sustainer, He is the source of life.
What happened to the Word?
1. He became flesh
to become flesh is to be like man, to have a physical body.
became - it implies that the Word did not have a flesh in the past. Jesus as the 2nd person person of the Trinity has Spiritual nature.
This means that the 2nd person of the Trinity, added another nature.
Spiritual and Human Nature.
The human nature that Adam and Eve originally had - not the fallen human nature.
2. Dwelt among us, We saw his glory
Dwelt - pitched his tent, encamped.
in the OT, God dwells in the Temple and not all people has access to God.
in the NT, God chose to be with his people in a more personal way.
many saw and witness the existence of Jesus - God in the flesh. John was among them.
many denied the existence of Jesus - John made it clear that Jesus existed.
Why did the Word became flesh?
Why is there a need for Jesus to add human nature?
Blood is required for forgiveness.
Hebrews 9:22 NASB95
22 And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Leviticus 17:11 NASB95
11 ‘For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.’
Matthew 26:28 NASB95
28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
Fulfillment of Prophecy: A Promised Ruler
Isaiah 7:14
Isaiah 7:14 NASB95
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
Isaiah 9:6 NASB95
6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Prophecy Fulfilled: Suffering Savior
Isaiah 53:4–6 NASB95
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
John 1:15 NASB95
15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ ”
John the baptist is older than Jesus by 6 months - but he said, “He existed before me”. because that is true - Jesus as the 2nd person of the Trinity existed before the foundation of the world (John 1:1)
John 1:16–17 NASB95
16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
fullness - Jesus is both God and Man
Jesus came to display the grace and truth of God, which the law cannot accomplished.
the Law reminds us of our inability to obey everything that is in it.
the law points us to someone who can obey everything that is in the Law.
Galatians 3:24 NASB95
24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.
Jesus is the truth
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Those who believe in the Son (truth), will be set free
John 8:31–32 NASB95
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
John 8:36 NASB95
36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
Jesus is full of grace -
Romans 3:23–24 NASB95
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
- justification is a gift by the grace of Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 1:12–16 NASB95
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14 and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. 15 It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all. 16 Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
- Grace for Paul and for those who will believe in Jesus
John 1:18 NASB95
18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
Rev. 22:21 - The last statement of the Book of Revelation contains a prayer and at the same time a promise - the grace of the Lord Jesus Chrsit be with us all. Amen (true, indeed).
Revelation 22:21 NASB95
21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
Conclusion:
Jesus came to earth because man cannot go to heaven on his own.
Jesus has to live the perfect life in obedience to the law, because we could not.
Jesus has to shed his blood so that we will be forgiven.
It is only by the grace of God that we can be saved.
Proper Response:
Put your trust and dependence on Jesus Christ. He is gracious to forgive your sins.
Celebrate Christmas with the love of Christ in your heart. Show grace and mercy, like Christ. Do not keep Christ away from His celebration.
