A Child Is Born

Isaiah 9:1-7
Isaiah 9:1–7 CSB
Nevertheless, the gloom of the distressed land will not be like that of the former times when he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali. But in the future he will bring honor to the way of the sea, to the land east of the Jordan, and to Galilee of the nations. The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness. You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy. The people have rejoiced before you as they rejoice at harvest time and as they rejoice when dividing spoils. For you have shattered their oppressive yoke and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of their oppressor, just as you did on the day of Midian. For every trampling boot of battle and the bloodied garments of war will be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.
Something good is coming.
No more gloom for those in anguish.
No more wandering around in darkness, chaos, confusion.
Light.
Increased Joy.
Increased nation.
Enemies defeated.
Blessing instead of oppression.
Something good is coming.
Because Someone good has come.

Jesus Is Our Joy

When Jesus begins his public ministry he goes to the Jordan River to be baptized by a prophet name John.
Look at Matthews account of this baptism.
Matthew 4:12-17
Matthew 4:12–17 CSB
12 When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 15 Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, along the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 16 The people who live in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned. 17 From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
We see hear that John the Baptizer, Matthew, and Jesus all recognize the fulfument of this prophet from Isaiah is standing in the water.
Jesus is the light dawning in darkness.
Jesus is the increaser of our joy.
Jesus is the harvester who sows seeds of joy.
Jesus is the burden breaker.
Jesus is the conquering warrior.
Jesus is the joy of nations
Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah, the King.
Jesus is the just ruler.
Jesus is the joyful judge.
Jesus.
Now that we know that Isaiah 9 applies to Jesus, let's dig in a little more.
Isaiah 9:1-2
Isaiah 9:1–2 CSB
Nevertheless, the gloom of the distressed land will not be like that of the former times when he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali. But in the future he will bring honor to the way of the sea, to the land east of the Jordan, and to Galilee of the nations. The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness.

A Light That Brings Joy

Light has come
Isaiah 9:2
Isaiah 9:2 CSB
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness.
2 Corinthians 4:6
2 Corinthians 4:6 CSB
For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.
John1:5
John 1:5 CSB
That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcomeB it.
John 8:12
John 8:12 CSB
Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”
Isaiah 9:2-3
Isaiah 9:2–3 CSB
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness. You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy. The people have rejoiced before you as they rejoice at harvest time and as they rejoice when dividing spoils.
Jesus is the LIGHT that brings joy.
There is no joy walking in darkness.
There is no joy walking without direction.
There is no joy walking without a vision of where you are going.
There is no joy in hopelessness.
Jesus is the Light in darkness.
He is the sun breaking the darkness at dawn.
He is the Light that gives humanity hope and vision.
Jesus is the Light that brings joy.
Why is there joy?
I want us to look at three FORS that tell us the reason for joy.

One For: The Burden Is Broken.

Isaiah 9:4
Isaiah 9:4 CSB
For you have shattered their oppressive yoke and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of their oppressor, just as you did on the day of Midian.
The reference to Midian is a throwback to the battle where Gideon led an army of 300 men against the oppressors the Midianites.
Gideon was nothing special.
Looking at Gideon or his family that would think anyone this is the one who will defeat our oppressors.
But God used Gideon.
Gideon destroyed the alter of the false god Baal.
Gideon then defeated Midian with an army of 300. God whittled the army for 32,000 to 300 men.
Jesus is a true and better Gideon.
Like a Freedom Fighter this Great Light will break the rod of the oppressor.
Colossians 2:15 ESV) [15] He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Two For: The War Has A Warrior Who Ends War.

Isaiah 9:5
Isaiah 9:5 CSB
For every trampling boot of battle and the bloodied garments of war will be burned as fuel for the fire.
His kingdom will be a Kingdom of Peace.
Every boot of war, all battle fatigues will be burnt up, useless and defeated.
One day every instrument of war will be burn up.
One day every instrument of violence will be repurposed into an instrument of peace.
Swords, gun, bombs, melted down into garden tools.
No more guns and school shootings.
No more medical forceps used to abort preborn humans.
No more genocide.
No more instruments of war.
What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see.
No more war.
No more weapons of war.
No more need for war.
As anyone who has ever been to war or lived thru war will tell you, that day will be a day of rejoicing.
As anyone who has ever lost a loved one to violence or been a victim of violence will tell you, that day will be a day of rejoicing.
As any mother grieving from the choice to abort her baby and as her baby will tell you, that day will be a day of great rejoicing.
His kingdom will be a kingdom of peace.
Even so LORD Jesus come quickly!

Three For: A Child Born. A Son Given. A Name Above All Names.

Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6 CSB
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
(A gift is given. A gift from Heaven.
[30] And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. [31] And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. [32] He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, [33] and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” [34] And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”[35] And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. (Luke 1:30-35 ESV)
and the government shall be upon his shoulder
(it's a new government, a new Kingdom.
My Kingdom Is Not of This World
John 18:33-38 ESV)[33] So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” [34] Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” [35] Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” [36] Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” [37] Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” [38] Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.),
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
(Wonderful Counselor - A “counselor” is one who is able to make wise plans (cf. 11:2). He is a ruler whose wisdom is beyond merely human capabilities.
Mighty God - A title of the Lord himself (10:20–21; Deut. 10:17; Neh. 9:32; Jer. 32:18).
Everlasting Father - A “father” here is a benevolent protector (cf. Isa. 22:21; Job 29:16), which is the task of the ideal king and is also the way God himself cares for his people (cf. Isa. 63:16; 64:8; Ps. 103:13).
Prince of Peace - He is the ruler whose reign will bring about peace because the nations will rely on his just decisions in their disputes (cf. Isa. 2:4; 11:6–9; 42:4; 49:7; 52:15) (ESV NOTES).
All these pictured together represent that in this Son from Heaven all the fullness of the Godhead dwelled.
Colossians 2:8-10 ESV [8] See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. [9] For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, [10] and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end
(His rule is ever expanding, Gate of hell can not prevail),
on the throne of David
((Matthew 1:17 ESV[17] So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations.) and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore (citizens of this Kingdom are both just and righteous). The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. [17] From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
The Kingdom is here. Isaiah's words proved true.
The King will return.
