John McKay of the NFL tells a story about duck hunting with Bear Bryant, the legendary coach of the University of Alabama. McKay says, “We were out shooting ducks, and finally, after about three hours, here comes one lonely duck. The Bear fires. And that duck kept on flying…and is still flying to this day. But Bear watched the duck flap away, looked at me and said, ‘John, you are witnessing a genuine miracle. There flies…a dead duck!”
Coach Bear Bryant was a confident man. He was fully persuaded that he was able to kill a duck every time he shot at one.
We too can be fully persuaded. Not in our own abilities, but in the promise keeping power of Almighty God. If God promises something, it will come to pass. It is God’s job to be faithful to His promises. It is our job to be faithful to God. We can be fully persuaded that if God promises something, He will also perform it.
Let’s look at what Paul writes in Romans 4 regarding Abraham.
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
How was Abraham able to be fully persuaded? It is because he CONSIDERED NOT, he STAGGERED NOT, and he DOUBTED NOT.
ABRAHAM CONSIDERED NOT
Abraham did not consider whether the problem was too big for God.
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:
ABRAHAM CONSIDERED NOT
Abraham did not consider the limitations of his body or of that of his wife Sarah’s.
Abraham was nearly 100 years old.
Sarah was nearly 90 years old.
They were both well past the age of child bearing.
But Abraham was not weak in his faith.
Abraham was fully persuaded that God was able to fulfill the promise to give him and Sarah a son even in their old age.
David did not consider his limitations when he faced Goliath.
WE MUST CONSIDER NOT
What we think are limitations.
What others think about us.
We cannot be weak in our faith.
We cannot focus on our circumstances.
We must be be fully persuaded that God:
Can overcome our limitations,
Is able to overcome our circumstances, and
Can fulfill the promises in His Word.
ABRAHAM STAGGERED NOT
Abraham did not stagger at the promises of God through unbelief.
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
ABRAHAM STAGGERED NOT
He staggered not at God’s promises of God through unbelief.
But he was strong in His faith.
He gave glory to God before the answer ever came.
Paul and Silas gave God the glory while they were still in prison.
WE MUST STAGGER NOT
We must not stagger at the promises of God.
But we must be strong in our faith.
We must give glory to God even before the answer comes.
We must be fully persuaded that God is working on our behalf and working everything out for our good and His glory.
ABRAHAM DOUBTED NOT
Abraham did not doubt, but was fully persuaded that God would follow through on His promises.
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
ABRAHAM DOUBTED NOT
He was not partially convinced.
He was fully persuaded.
He was fully persuaded that if God promised it, He was able to perform it.
Abraham did not doubt when God asked him to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice.
WE MUST DOUBT NOT
We must trust God’s faithfulness.
We must be fully persuaded.
We must believe, without doubting, that if He promised it, He will perform it.
