SCRIPTURE:
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.
MESSAGE TITLE:
Buy The Plot
PRAYER:
TRANSITION:
Turn to three people and tell them your name, get to know someone really quick!
WELCOME ONLINE FAMILY:
We want to welcome those of you who are with us online, you aren’t just a part of our church, you are our church!
My name is Kyle Popineau, I’m the pastor of Legacy Church and I want to welcome you to our weekend worship experience, we’re so glad you’re with us!
STORY:
When I used to get in trouble as a kid, there were a few things Dad or Mom would say that let you know the severity of the offense. “Wait til your dad gets home” “I have spoken” You just bought the farm!”
CONTEXT:
Jesus has been speaking with people all day and at the end of the day His disciples come to Him privately and ask for clarity on a few of the parables He shared. Matt 13:36
Then, leaving the crowds outside, Jesus went into the house. His disciples said, “Please explain to us the story of the weeds in the field.”
7 Parables shared in this chapter alone.
Jesus only taught in parables when speaking in crowds. Matt 13:34 Jesus always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables. 35 This fulfilled what God had spoken through the prophet: “I will speak to you in parables. I will explain things hidden since the creation of the world.”
MAIN THOUGHTS:
God’s main tool that he uses to evangelize this world is the local church. It was worth dying for.
God is going to use you. He has plans for you. What God is going to do in the earth He is going to do through us.
You have a need for land, I have a plot for you. Treasure has need to be found, I’m sending a worker. What God does, He does through us.
The disciples needed clarity, Jesus broke down the parables and gave clarity. Jesus needed the disciples to listen, the disciples listened and asked for more understanding.
“We need to see the hand of God at work!” We are the hands of Jesus. 1 Cor 12:27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.
“We need to pray for a move of God” We are the feet of Christ. If God’s not moving in our city it’s because we’re on our butts.
Churches can reach cities when the Pastor and the People take their calls seriously!
Everywhere in scripture that God did something meaningful in His church, He called a man of God to a place, then He called people to that man and when they both took their calls seriously, the city was changed.
Jesus - had to go through Samaria (John 4:4) Woman gets called to Jesus, He uses her to evangelize the entire city.
Timothy - called to Thessalonica (1 Thess 3:2) The church there was the one used by God to model sanctification for the rest of history.
Lydia - gave her life to Christ then started a church in Europe (Acts 16:3) This is the church that we can trace our ancestry to. God used her to start the church, and that church became the first foothold of the Kingdom in Europe.
God has entrusted and called me to Tustin. He gave me a vision for Legacy Church. I have to answer to God for that call and I have to provide vision for Legacy Church, but you determine the speed of the vision. Thats why there are churches who buy property and hold it for 20 years and never move, or churches who stay portable their entire life because it takes more than just the vision from the pastor it takes the speed of your partnership to make it happen!
“That sounds like a lot of responsibility” IT IS! Your responsibility is to further the kingdom and God wants to use YOU IN LEGACY, YOU THROUGH LEGACY to make it happen!
The parables Jesus used to describe His Kingdom teach us that the Kingdom is so valuable that the wise are willing to sacrifice anything in order to gain it
Jesus says in Matt 19:21-26 (the story of the rich young ruler) that if he wanted to be perfect, he would need to sell everything he had and give it to the poor.
This parable is bookended by two other parables whose meanings teach us that there will be a separation between those who are for the Kingdom and those who aren’t.

WORD STUDY: Treasure
*We use scripture to interpret scripture.
The word treasure used in this verse is the same as the word treasure from the verse we heard last week, Matt 6:21
Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
The word means treasure (wealth), treasure box, or store-house.
This same word “store-house” is used in Malachi 3:10 means the Temple.
Malachi 3:10
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!
Application:
What does this mean for us? It means that if we are wise, we give everything we have to build His church and expand His kingdom!
The Kingdom of Heaven is like a storehouse!
Those who Jesus calls wise invest in the church and better yet, invest through the church!
Investing in the church is the only investment with an eternal ROI.

WORD STUDY: Field
The word “field” is used to show not just a plot of land, useless for anything other than holding buried treasure, it also meant farm and estate.
This means that the man didn’t just buy the field, he bought the farm! He bought the entire property: house, stables, barns, guest house, and land.
This property had everything on it that he needed to survive, even without the treasure!
This property had everything needed to sustain a life capable of furthering the treasure!
Application:
What does this mean for us? When we invest in the Storehouse, in the church, God will make sure we have everything we need, plus, we get the treasure! We get to be in the Kingdom!
POINTS OF TRUTH 1:
He surrendered everything. He sold everything… We surrender everything when we accept His sacrifice on the cross. But our life with Him can’t stop there.
POINT OF TRUTH 2:
He gave everything. He bought the field with the money from selling everything. He didn’t just sell everything to surrender it, he then spent everything he had to get the Kingdom. We are invited to give everything on top of what we have surrendered. It doesn’t stop at salvation (surrender), the Christ-life is a generosity-life.
There are going to be people who sell things to give in this expansion offering, and regardless of the amount, God is looking at a posture of our hearts!
POINT OF TRUTH 3:
He did it out of excitement. Points to 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 The attitude in which we give matters. The attitude in which we give determines the return we get. (Call back to Cain’s offering).
I don’t want to give an offering and ask God to work with what I give him, in spite of me. If God has to work in spite of you it means He doesn’t have the authority to inside of you.
