Famine arose and drove them east
Sickness and death quickly followed
Gone were Naomi’s husband and sons
Her soul was left bitter and hollow
Ruth alone stayed by her side
Saying, “Where you go I shall go
Whatever fate may befall us
Your God will be mine also”
And so the two returned back home
And to Boaz’ property Ruth did stumble
Seeking to glean grain from his field
She found a man both generous and noble
“Boaz?!” Said Naomi with a smile
Her bitter heart began to mend
“This man you met you must go to tonight
He is the redeemer of our kin”
Ruth was off to the threshing floor
Where at Boaz’ feet she lay
“Commit to me by marriage’s oath
So with you my heart may stay”
Boaz awoke with gentle alarm
My dear your honor is true
The Lord bless this oath I pray
I shall do this thing for you
The elders listened to Boaz’ proposition and replied
“Naomi’s land I desire but Ruth I cannot handle”
With joy and gladness Boaz responded,
“Great! Please take my sandal!”
And so Ruth and Boaz wed
Naomi’s sorrow turned to laughter
Through their line came a King David
And they all lived happily ever after
Greater still the story continued
Through this sacred line
Would come a king above all others
A King both holy and divine
This king would leave His throne
And be born in a manger
He would die on a cross
To free us from sin’s danger
Like Naomi our sorrow turns to joy
As death is swallowed up in victory
This king has conquered our sin
And has changed the course of history
His name is Jesus the Christ
He offers His grace to all
For it was because of love He came
And was born there in the stall
It was in the city of David
Ruth’s descendant lay by night
Sent to redeem more than just kin
To be in the darkness light
