Intro
three pieces of one big picture
who Jesus and John are
Messengers from John
John’s uncertainty seems a little strange
ask if Jesus really is the one he is meant to be preparing the way for
we don’t have a good explanation as to why
knows he is supposed to be preparing the way, maybe he is just being cautious and detached
Jesus doesn’t count it against him, he simply gives examples
Luke-warm Generation
after John’s disciples go he turns to the crowd
what were you expecting- many had discredited John as a crazy man for his weird way of living
neither he nor John are what the people expect the savior and his prophet to be
God does not aim to meet the expectation of mortals
The Pharisee and the Sinful Woman
after this Jesus creates a situation to prove his point
He goes to the pharisee’s house, likely to eat with other important religious figures and his own apostles
a woman who was a sinner- likely a young widow forced into prostitution
if he was a prophet he would know- the thing Jesus just got done saying
parable of the moneylender
her sins are forgiven because of her love and her faith
she washed and she was washed
she gave up all that she had and risked it for a chance and so she goes in peace
Application
God is not always what man expects him to be
He works in his way which is far beyond us
He is not working to meet your expectations, he far exceeds them
you represent that God
whose expectations are you living and working to meet?
How much are you limiting yourself and God living in you by living as you are expected to?
