Joshua11
Joshua 8:1-35
The Battle at Ai
1. In Chapter 6, we studied about the Israelites’ conquest of Jericho. A short time later, here we are reading about their battle against the kingdom of Ai. As we examine these two battles, we see many similarities and many differences. Compare the two battles, considering the following areas:
a) The Lord’s encouragement to the Israelites prior to the battle.
Jericho
Ai
b) The military strategy used in each attack.
Jericho
Ai
c) The instruction on how to treat the inhabitants, their livestock, their possessions
Jericho
Ai
d) The instruction on what was to happen to this piece of real estate from here on.
Jericho
Ai
2. In the last chapter, we saw the first attempt to conquer Ai ended in a humiliating defeat. This resulted in loss of many lives, and the ultimate annihilation of Achan and his family. The nation of Israel had to learn a stern lesson.
a) In spite of this humiliation and punishment, how did the Lord use this digression to the advantage of His people?
b) Give an example in your own life where you took the “wrong” actions due to your impatience, pride or greed, and the Lord used this for good.
3. In 8:18 the Lord tells Joshua to stretch out his arm holding his javelin toward Ai. Joshua holds it there until the battle is won (8:26). Read Exodus 17:8-16.
a) Compare Joshua’s actions here to Moses’ in the battle against the Amalekites.
b) What do these battles tell us about the force that truly facilitated these victories?
4. In the last five verses of this chapter (8:31-35), we read about the actions taken by the Nation of Israel following the victory at Ai. One point stands out, and is mentioned over and over in these verses. The nation of Israel must confirm its obedience to God, through careful observance of the Mosaic laws. Read Deuteronomy, Chapter 27. Describe Moses’ commands, and explain how Joshua and the Israelites fulfilled them here.
