Matthew 26:36-46
Matthew 26:36-46
How did Jesus feel about going to the cross? was he happy about it
luke 22:44 “44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.”
Matthew 26:47-56
Matthew 26:47-56
Jesus could have called 12 legions of angles (thousands) to come help him at any moment.
Jesus isnt just a passive victim in that moment, he is choosing to suffer

Matthew 27:11
Judas tries to give the money back and stop it
Judas “hangs” himself / guts spill out in some versions. this wouldve been him jumping on a spike and hanging on it afterwards.
Matthew 27:11-26
Matthew 27:11-26
The Jews didn’t have the right to execute so they had to take them to the Romans
Pilate was willing to let him go but the Jews called for another
the Romans used rebellion leaders as examples, and crucified them along the roads
Matthew 27:27-31

the soldiers are mocking him
they put a robe on him. it would have stuck to the wounds on his back
at this point hes been awake for probably 24 hours at this point, the soldiers are tired of him
Matthew 27:32-44
Matthew 27:32-44
they made him carry the cross, he couldnt carry it the whole way, so they make some guy Simon carry it the rest of the way.
the Romans perfected the greek torture death of crucifiction. it was so bad that even the people doing it to him offered him pain killers.
the “nail through the hand” wouldve actually been the wrist. they didnt have a name for wrist. and in that part of the wrist is the ulnar nerve which would be triggered every time he moved.
how you died on the cross was suffocation hanging from your wrist you cant breath. so he would have to lift himself up, on that nerve, scraping his back against the wood.
this lasted for 3 hours.
Matthew 27:45-55
Matthew 27:45-55
“Eli,Eli, lema sabachthani” - jesus is quoting psalm 22:1
It is at this point that for the first time in Jesus’ eternal existence that he is ever cut off from God.

Why did it take all this? why not quick and easy death?
Thats how much suffering out sin warranted. it says after this ‘he gave up his spirit’, implying that he was holding on until it was finished.
