Where does your allegiance fall?
Advent: a time to consider allegiances, look forward to the Messiah who comes lowly & humble, dying to sin, rising to restore
John the Baptist: the herald of the reign of the Messiah in a world ruled by sin
Call to repentance: clarity about reality determined by God, confronting false allegiances
Allegiance to reign dark power vs a Hidden Kingdom
World where strong thrive, weak die; cunning, craftiness, money, and status rule the day
dark powers where rich & powerful use and abuse the poor and outcast
the only one you can trust is you, greed & independence are highest values.
But the advent of the Messiah brings a Hidden reign into this world
the lowly are lifted up, the rich brought low; the weak are made strong, strong made weak.
Comes by way of a backwater prophet baptizing in the wilderness, baby in a manger, and greatest victory is on a cross
Christianity: allegiance to reign of Jesus as the hidden story of everything, despite appearances
Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV)
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
Rather than building ourselves up, we live the way of Jesus.
Doctrine/Theology: not dusty, boring mumbo-jumbo that’s a waste of time, but Jesus’s teaching of the story of everything
Allegiance to reign of sin vs forgiveness
World of bad religion that abuses and condemns
slave to salvation/condemnation
sinners define themselves as false salvation
But the advent of the Messiah brings repentance for forgiveness
Repent: forgiveness is reality determined by God; acknowledge need for forgiveness
God takes sin on Himself and gives you His identity
Christianity: allegiance to reign of God that forgives sins and regenerates sinners into new life
Rather than continuing to sin, we live in patterns of forgiveness
Go to forgiveness again and again for identity, forgive others
Allegiance to reign of greed vs restoration
World where nothing matters because eventually won’t exist, anyway
Selfish use time, money, food, clothing, status, you name it
The only thing that matters is personal happiness
But the advent of the Messiah brings resurrection restoration to the world - it matters!
“Bear fruits in keeping with repentance” - live according to the reality that God will restore all things
If the Messiah comes to save this world and make it all new, it’s all His and it’s all holy.
Christianity: allegiance to reign of God that gives eternal value to even the smallest corners of creation
Rather than greedily using creation to our own benefit & happiness we care for creation
Vocations are holy, hope is passed from generation to generation
Our Messiah came once, He reigns now, and He’s coming again.
In a world where dark powers, sin, and greed appear to reign, there’s a true story of a hidden Kingdom of forgiveness and restoration
