Dearly beloved friends and family, we are gathered here tonight to celebrate the life of Kyler W. Mott
Born March 26, 1994
Entered into the Arms of Jesus November 27, 2021, at the age of 27, surrounded by those that love Him Most
Kyler is survived by his parents, Rick and Kim Mott, His grandmother, Sandy Bonds, many loving family members and friends
Kyler was a quiet, introverted young man that believed the best things in life were close to home
He would venture far from home, for the sake of yard sales, if he thought it might bag him treasures for his business
No corner of Georgia or Alabama was safe if there was a deal to be struck
Kyler knew how to drive a bargain, and he was determined to get them
But as soon as he had them, Kyler was quick back to the house, where he would sell vintage toy and video game finds for a profit
Sure, Kyler had childhood adventures
He played sports and learned to love them
He loved music, and even shared that love with others
Kim and Sandy shared with me his passion in singing “God Bless the USA” in the children’s program at church
He let grandma drag him into the tunnels of the mountains
while he knew the differences between a “good tunnel” and a “baby tunnel,” he was always most comfortable at home
A rare bird in this generation, Kyler didn’t use social media
Now, he liked Facebook Marketplace, but he was happy to use others for that!
Rick told me that he always knew when Kyler had used his facebook account to search the marketplace because all of the sudden there would be ads all over the place
He avoided photos and videos any way that he could
Kyler was happiest at home with his family, his friends, and His beloved pets
I believe that Kyler was loved by more people than He realized
But he only called a small group of people his friends
He loved living at home with his parents, and was close to them
Perhaps Kyler was closest to his grandmother
I don’t know many 27 year-old’s that talk with their grandmother everyday
Or that call grandma their “yard-sale buddy”
Or that keep her on the phone so long that mom has to step in to help grandma get off of the call
But that was Kyler-He kept his circle small, but those who were in it were well loved and cared for
Kyler was quiet, kind, gentle, loving, and respectful
He was always ready to help anyone that needed it
Sandy told me that she often lost him at yard sales because he went to go help someone
And I know that tonight you are hurting...
You hurt because no one saw this day coming
When Kyler had his stroke on November 4th, no one saw it coming
Even then, no one could imagine that day we would be sitting here together tonight, saying goodbye to Him
You hurt because you miss him
You miss his smile
You miss his presence
You miss the crazy and the quiet moments that you had together
You hurt because his death seems wrong
It seems like Kyler died too young
27 years seems like too short a time for such a wonderful person to be with us
It seems unfair
No parent should have to bury their child
No grandparent should outlive their grandchild
It seems that death is unnatural
It feels as though no one should ever have to endure the suffering, pain, and loss that death brings
All of us know that this life ends, and yet we all expect it to go on forever, and the shock that it doesn’t stings all the more with Kyler’s absence
Tonight, you are hurting, and I know that no words I can say will change that
The pain and the heartache does not ease
It does not go away
With time, it gets easier to live with, because there is more time between the moments that you feel it
And yet, a song, a memory, a moment, can whisk you right back to where you are now
BUT, despite the pain that you are feeling...
Despite your grief and your heartache...
Despite the scars that this will leave you with...
Despite Kyler’s absence that no one can fill...
I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that tonight we are here for a celebration
Tonight, in this place, we can find healing
Tonight, in this place, we are filled with hope
Tonight, through our tears, we have joy, and can smile with singing
because tonight, we know that Kyler’s death is not the end, it is the beginning
I didn’t know Kyler
But I do know the people that loved him best
And they bear witness to the fact that Kyler knew the greatest truth that any man could ever know
Kyler knew what it meant to be a follower of Jesus
And if he were here with you tonight, Kyler would want you to know what he knows
Everyone that I have talked to that knew Kyler tells me that Kyler was a good person...
He was kind, loving, friendly, quiet, respectful, obedient, compassionate, and gentle
All of these things are incredible qualities, some of them even Godly
But Kyler knew that he was not a good person-because there is no such thing
Kyler had believed in the God of heaven, who made the heavens and the earth
Just like me and you, Kyler was created to glorify God in loving obedience
And Kyler knew that he had broken God’s laws, and that everyone else has too
Romans 3:23 NASB95
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
And because God is a good judge, Kyler knew that God would never leave sin unpunished
You remember, I said that death feels unnatural? That’s because it is
Your body was made to live forever
Your cells replicate over and over
Your body heals itself from injury
It was made to live forever
But why don’t we live forever?
Why do we grow old?
The plans to make a whole new you are right there in your bones
And yet we die, some young, some old
death is one of the greatest mysteries of life-but Kyler found the answer
Our death is cause by our sin
The first half of Romans 6:23 tells us “For the wages of sin is death...”
Kyler knew that death is only possible because of sin
It is the judgment that you and I deserve
It is what we have earned for the things that we do that are wrong
And death is something that each and everyone of us will face
One day, each and everyone of us will have a service like this one
Maybe the room will be crowded
Maybe there will just be a few
But one day, people that love you will gather to mourn your passing
And you will stand before the judgment seat of God, where Kyler stood this past Saturday
And all of the sudden, the reality of God will be clear to those who believe, and to those that don’t
And the good you have done won’t matter, because just like everybody else, you will find that you are guilty
Because your sin makes you an enemy of God, and there is nothing you can do to change that
But as hopeless as that sounds, in that moment, Kyler would want you to know that there is hope
There is a way out
You see,
John 3:16 NASB95
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Kyler knew that he was guilty of sin, just like you
But he also knew that God loves him, just as he loves you
God loves you so much, that He didn’t want you to die the death that you deserve to die
But because He is just, your sin had to be punished
And So, God sent someone to be punished for you
Jesus loves you so much, He came to die in your place so that you could have life after death
Romans 5:8 NASB95
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Jesus died to pay Kyler’s penalty for sin. And He died for you as well
If Kyler were standing here today, he would tell you the rest of Romans 6:23
Romans 6:23 NASB95
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
You and I deserve death, just like Kyler
But the good news for you and I is what Kyler already knew
death in this life is not the end-it is the beginning
And for those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ, death is actually something to look forward to
We don’t have to suffer the judgment we deserve
Romans 10:9 NASB95
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
You can be saved from your sins
You can be spared the judgment that you deserve
And while your physical body may one day die, even that is temporary
One day, Jesus is coming back
Death has already been defeated, but one day it will be destroyed
There will be no more sin, and no more death
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 NASB95
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.
Today is a day of celebration because today, Kyler is with Jesus
Today, Kyler is no longer hurting or in a comma
Today, Kyler isn’t looking down, wishing to be here
Today, His eyes are fixed on Jesus, and He knows what true joy is
We say that a young death is tragic...
We think of all the things in this life that Kyler will miss
We think of how we cling to this life as though it is the best thing because we know nothing else
But might I suggest to you that Kyler is blessed
Kyler didn’t experience the pain of old age and aching bones
He didn’t have to see the mounting deaths of those that he loves
Today, Kyler is alive in eternity. He is with Jesus, the Author of Life and the Lord of All
That isn’t a life to be pitied-it is a joy to be celebrated
Kyler is, literally, in Heaven!
and one day you will have the opportunity to join him
Kyler would want you to know the hope that he had in Jesus
He would want you to know that you will see him again
He would want you to join him in the air that day, as we all go together to be with the Lord forever and ever and ever
Today, Kyler’s faith has become sight, and those of us that are following Jesus can truly celebrate today, even through our tears
And truly the only question is, could we say the same for you?
Unless Christ returns first, one day you and I will have a day like Kyler is having today
Your loved ones will be gathered together to mourn and to grieve your death
I promise you, no one ever really believes it is coming-I’m sure Kyler didn’t -but it will come
It could be tonight. It could be tomorrow. It could be 100 years from now
But when that day comes, will the grief of your loved ones also be a time of celebration, or merely grief?
I sat with this family. In the midst of welling tears, they were laughing, and smiling and living
Because they know they will see Kyler again… will they also see you?
One day, someone will pay the debt of your sin- won’t you let it be Jesus!
I could think of no greater way you could honor the life and the love that you knew as Kyler, than to find the same salvation that he found in choosing to follow Jesus as your Savior and Lord
Through your tears, won’t you join Kyler in His celebration
