All Tied Up!
Begin at Galatians 5:1
Ask: What does this verse mean?
We are freed from seeking to be justified by the law. (V 4)
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery; that is; having your lifestyle limited by the rules and regulations of the 10 commandments. You are now free in Christ!
For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Read: 2 Peter 2:17-22
They have enticed those who have barley escaped form the ones who live in error - -
PROMISING THEM FREEDOM WHILE THEY ARE THE SLAVES OF CORRUPTION; FOR BY WHAT A MAN IS OVERCOME, BY THIS HE IS ENSLAVED.
This phrase - Promising them freedom - indicates the essence of their teaching.
What is this freedom or lack there of that Peter is talking about?
class=Section2> Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed
All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be enslaved by anything
class=Section3> One is truly free when he is able to do that which he ought to do
One is truly free when he desires to do that which he ought to do - and is able to do it
To do that which is good - healthy - beneficial - kind - caring - honoring to God
So, what does an enslaved person look like or act like?
They are devoid of spiritual refreshment
Without spiritual vitality - hollow
The message disappoints the follower by promising vitality but not delivering it.
The metaphor - empty well.
I think of the woman at the well - drawing literal water but inside very dry
Jesus said he could give her water unto eternal life - a new quality of life.
They live hazy and unstable lives
A cloud dissipating away and leaving nothing but a fog
When the fog lifts there is nothing
lamp unto my feet - Light unto my path
They are slaves of their sinful nature
They mouth empty boastful words and try to pull others into their corruption
Under the sensuality - deceptive
They are enslaved in their own corruption
Try to get out of it - Keep being overtaken
They stand under judgement
Judgement - black darkness
Dog - vomit
Pig - slop
