Introduction:

The Story of Noah

Genesis 6:6 NLT
6 So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.
· Notice that God’s heart can be broken
· It’s one of the emotions of God

What breaks his heart?

· ________________________

What makes God smile? (From last week)

· ________________________
· Tonight we will dig deeper into that how to make him smile.
· Five ways

God smiles when we love him supremely.

a. We see this on display with Noah
Genesis 6:9 NLT
9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
ii. I believe the mistake many make is they make fellowship with God to difficult
iii. They need a list of things to do
iv. They must act in a certain way
v. It’s not what you do it’s what you are.
b. Here’s an incredible verse
Hosea 6:6 NLT
6 I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.
ii. We think it’s the sacrifices that causes God to love us.
iii. It’s a relationship – worship – prayer – listening – serving
c. The greatest commandment
Matthew 22:37–38 NLT
37 Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.

God smiles when we trust him completely.

a. Even when it didn’t make sense
Hebrews 11:7 The Message
7 By faith, Noah built a ship in the middle of dry land. He was warned about something he couldn’t see, and acted on what he was told. The result? His family was saved. His act of faith drew a sharp line between the evil of the unbelieving world and the rightness of the believing world. As a result, Noah became intimate with God.
b. What a task God called Noah to do.
i. I’m going to flood the earth and kill everyone but you family
ii. It’s gonna rain – never had before
iii. You are going to build a boat
iv. On dry land nowhere near water
v. That’s faith
vi. He trusted God completely, and that made God smile
c. Was he discouraged?
i. No doubt
ii. But he stepped through his fear
iii. That made God smile

God smiles when we obey him wholeheartedly.

a. Noah was given the exact details to build a boat
i. Think of all those animals
ii. There would so much to keeping things organized
iii. Here’s what Noah did.
Genesis 6:22 NLT
22 So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.
b. I’ll pray about it
i. Every parent knows that delayed obedience is really disobedience.
ii. Instant obedience will teach you more about God than a lifetime of Bible discussions.
iii. We want to pick and choose the commands we obey. (Partial obedience)
iv. Of course partial obedience is disobedience

God smiles when we praise and thank him continually.

a. Want to be miserable?
i. 15 habits of miserable people
ii. They’re never thankful for anything.
b. My love language is words of affirmation
i. God loves that too
ii. Noah knew this was important
Genesis 8:20 NLT
20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and there he sacrificed as burnt offerings the animals and birds that had been approved for that purpose.
c. We don’t offer animal sacrifice
i. But we offer a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving
Psalm 69:30–31 NLT
30 Then I will praise God’s name with singing, and I will honor him with thanksgiving. 31 For this will please the Lord more than sacrificing cattle, more than presenting a bull with its horns and hooves.
iii. An amazing thing happens when we offer praise and thanksgiving to God.
iv. When we give God enjoyment, our own hearts are filled with joy!

God smiles when we use our abilities.

a. Everything is important
i. Every part of our life can bring God glory and brings God enjoyment
ii. Working, eating, resting, life!
Psalm 37:23 NLT
23 The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
b. Don’t put it under a basket
i. If you hide the abilities that God has given you then don’t make God smile and makes for a miserable life.
ii. Make the goal of your life pleasing God.
iii. That will be a purpose driven life.
