1 Peter 1:8–9 (ESV)
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,
9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
When every one is Super… No one will be.
Quote from the Animated movie “The Incredibles”
If you don’t know the plot (Spoiler alert!!!! - but seriously came out 17 YEARS AGO!!)
Young boy name Buddy ended up with a huge grudge against Mr. Incredible. So he started inventing things to give everyone Super Human abilities. His evil plot, however, was to make Superior things so common they become ordinary (not special at all)
I feel like that is what we have done with some of our english words. (such as)
Love
Joy
That is what we are talking about this morning.....Joy
Specifically the Christians ability (and audacity) to
“Rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with Glory.”
This verse is describing Christian Joy?
Peter is talking about a very specific kind of Joy.
You might call this Christian Joy
Christian joy is reserved for believers.
“…you believe in Him...”
Christian Joy is Inexpressible.
the best words I can conjure fail to express the joy I feel toward God the Father and my Lord Jesus Christ.
Closely related to happiness
More a state of being than an emotion
Christian Joy is filled with Glory.
related to the Glory that comes from God
Why do Christians do that?
NOTE: Verses 8&9 are the climax of this section.
(*This joy isn’t created … it’s obtained!)
1 Peter 1:3–4 (ESV)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
“The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”
Starts of as Peter worshipping God
You’ll remember: Jesus was almost stoned to death because He called God His father (making Himself equal with God)
Here Peter is stating that very fact.
Our inexpressible joy is based on our faith in God, who came to earth and lived among us, even died for us.
“According to HIs great mercy”
For some, this joy seems unattainable.
I don’t deserve that kind of joy
Our love (and therefore our Joy)
isn’t based on our merit
It is offered according to His great mercy!
“…He has caused us to be born again to a living hope...”
THIS is the reason for christian joy.
born again: the old you is gone!
living hope:
Living because Jesus lives
Not a hope that is perishable
We “rejoice with a joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory”… because “He has caused is to be born again to a living hope.”
Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ
implied in our being born again
now stated out right
Without the resurrection there is no hope
no reason for joy (certainly not christian joy)
To an inheritance
that is imperishable, undefiled, unfading
kept in heaven for you
FOR YOU!!!!!
You have a personal identity with GOD
God knows YOU
Hey Daddy!!!!
When Becca was a little girl, I would sometime run around lunchtime. My route took me by her school. One day I ran by and there were kids everywhere (hundreds?). So much noise, screams, laughter!
Then out of all that noise and chaos I hear the most precious voice yell, “Hey Daddy!” It was my little girl.
There were kids all over that playground. But that voice belong to my child. I looked and out of all the kids running around, I saw the one that was infinitely more valuable to me that all of them. My little girl!
There is an inheritance in heaven waiting for YOU.
What else it true about this inheritance?
5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
It is being guarded by the power of God
The troubles here have no impact on my inheritance there!
Why? Because of the power of God.
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
IN THIS YOU REJOICE
