Isaiah 9:6-7

Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder:And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, Upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, To order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice From henceforth even for ever.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Introduction

As we continue our look into the superlatives of Jesus the Messiah from the hand of Isaiah the prophet of God, we move to the second set, “Mighty God.”

· Superlative means “of the highest degree of a particular quality.”

“Surpassing all others: supreme.”

· Attribute is defined as “a quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something.”

Mighty God

This attribute is more of a descriptor of the power and work of Jesus.

Mighty - The Hebrew word translated as “mighty” is defined by implication to a warrior…a champion, chief, strong, or valiant.

God – in the Hebrew is “el.”

Used for deity.

The Name of God Applied to the Messiah

These names refer to the divine nature of the Messiah and the power that has been bestowed unto Him.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Romans 9:5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever.

Amen.

1 John 5:20-21 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ.

He is the true God and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

John 20:28-29 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me?

Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

1 Timothy 3:16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

Hebrews 1:8 8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.

All Authority is Given to Christ by His Father

Jesus is Creator of all things

John 1:3 ESV All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Colossians 1:16 ESV For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

1 Corinthians 8:6 ESV Yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

Jesus is the Mighty God because God gave Him all Authority.

Mt 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Jesus used this Authority to forgive sins (Mt: 9:6)

Mt 9:6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.”

Jesus used this Authority to cast out evil spirits and heal disease (Mt 10:1)

Mt 10:1 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.

Jesus gave this Authority to His disciples to become sons of God (Jn 1:12)

Jn 1:11-13 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Jesus gave this Authority to His disciples to share in his work (Mk 3:15)

Mk 3:13-15 And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him.

And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons.

Jesus used His Authority to do Many Mighty Works (Mt 11:20)

Jesus had gone through many of the cities of Galilee preaching repentance and confirming His “mighty works” through miracles and selecting His disciples.

His Authority is shown in His right to denounce these cities for their rejection of His Gospel…the Gospel of Grace.

Mt 11:20 Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.

Jesus performs mighty miracles because He is Almighty GOD!

Turn with me in your Bibles to the New Testament book of Matthew.

Matthew 14:13-33

This passage contains two of the miracles of Jesus the Messiah.

The feeding of the “five thousand men, besides the women and children.”

(Matt 14:13-21) and Jesus walking on the water (Matt 14:22-33)

These miracles, standing alone should have been enough for the people and the Disciples to fully be aware that Jesus is the Almighty God, El Gibbor.

“El” is the short for the most common name of God in the Old Testament, “Elohim,” When the Bible says in its very first verse in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” the word for God there is “Elohim.”

2,606 times in the Bible, the writers referred to Elohim as the name of God.

It is interesting that Isaiah uses El Gibbor, because “Gibbor” is an adjective that modifies “El”, the Mighty One.

Therefore, Isaiah 9:6 is saying is literally saying, “And he will be called… The Mighty, Mighty One.”

Feeding 5000 (Mt 14:13-21)

The Disciples wanted to send the people away

Jesus said to bring what food was available

Jesus fed 5000 men plus women and children out of 5 loaves and 2 fish and had leftovers!

Walking on Water (Mt 14:22-33)

Sent the Disciples on ahead and sent the crowd home

Went up the mountain to pray

Walked on the water to the boat

Caused Peter to walk on the water, too

Calming a Storm

One of the reasons Peter sank is he looked at the storm

When He got in the boat, the wind stopped

And there *arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up.

Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they *woke Him and *said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"

And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be still."

And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.

And He said to them, "Why are you afraid?

Do you still have no faith?"

They became very much afraid and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?" (Mark 4:37-41 NASB)

Who Is This Jesus That We Worship?

· Jesus cured the nobleman’s son (Jn 4:46-47)

· Great haul of fishes (Lk 5:1-11)

· Cast out unclean spirits and devils (Mk 1:23-28)

· Healed Peter’s mother in law (Mk 1:30-31)

· Healed leper (Mk 1:40-45)

· Jesus healed the centurion's servant (Matthew 8:5-13).

· Jesus raised the widow's son from the dead (Luke 7:11-18).

· Jesus stilled the storm (Matthew 8:23-27).

Who Is This Emmanuel?

· Jesus cured two demoniacs (Matthew 8:28-34).

· Jesus cured the paralytic (Matthew 9:1-8).

· Jesus raised the ruler's daughter from the dead (Matthew 9:18-26).

· Jesus cured a woman of an issue of blood (Luke 8:43-48).

· Jesus opened the eyes of two blind men (Matthew 9:27-31).

· Jesus loosened the tongue of a man who could not speak (Matthew 9:32-33).

· Jesus healed an invalid man at the pool called Bethesda (John 5:1-9).

· Jesus restored a withered hand (Matthew 12:10-13).

· Jesus cured a demon-possessed man (Matthew 12:22).
