Background

Understanding that person for Christmas (The reason for Christmas)

The Story

the book of Luke we have the chance to witness that history of the birth and Childhood of our Lord.
We even have a chance to learn of the history of things that happen before
Luke 1:26–38 NASB95
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32 “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God. 36 “And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. 37 “For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

The amazing visit

V.26-28

Luke 1:26–28 NASB95
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”
We Remember Nazareth, Nathaniel said “could anything good come from Nazareth?”
There is a virgin who’s name was Mary who was engaged to be married.
Israel Marriage
normally the young woman that was to be married was between the ages of 12-14
To be engaged means that the marriage paperwork is already done
divorce is the only way to break the engagement.
so until the wedding party, the bride would lifve with there parents until then.

V.29

Luke 1:29 NASB95
29 But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was.
Mary could be confused, but more then that. I could be described as a intense curiosity
I mean this is not something that happens everyday...

V.30

Luke 1:30 NASB95
30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.
The Angel tells Mary not to be afraid. That she has found favor with God.
This favor is NOT because of something that Mary has done.
But it is something that God is doing to display His greatness and Grace.
This grace is explained by the Angel......
what is this grace.

V.31

Luke 1:31 NASB95
31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.
The Angel gives Mary the news that she would have a child a son. And His name will be named Jesus
the Angel gave Mary news and specific instructions.

v.32-33

Luke 1:32–33 NASB95
32 “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”
The angel says that Jesus will be Great.
Unlike the statement that is made about John the Baptist
Luke 1:15 NASB95
15 “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb.
john the baptist will be great in the sight of the Lord,
Jesus will be great.

V.34

Luke 1:34 NASB95
34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”
Mary questions how is she going to have a child seeing that she has had no sexual experience
she is not doubting, the Angel’s announcement nor does she seek a sign like Zechariah (Luke 1:18)
She was puzzled, so the Angel elaborated
and again, she would be pregnant while living with her parents
Oh Boy!!!! explaining this to mom and dad!!!

Another note

Joseph was visited also Matthew 1:24
Matthew 1:24 NASB95
24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,
So Joseph took Mary as his Wife....this had to have been before she started to show

V. 35

Luke 1:35 NASB95
35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.
Wow what news!!!
We see that the Holy Spirit is at work here.
The Holy Spirit is part of the God Head, and has creation power. to place a child inside of this young woman

V.36

Luke 1:36 NASB95
36 “And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month.
The angel tells her that not only will you be having a Baby but your relative Elizabeth (who is older) is also having a baby too
miracle on top of a miracle
So Mary maybe does not feel alone at this point. If there is one who understands its Elizabeth.
V.37
Luke 1:37 NASB95
37 “For nothing will be impossible with God.”
FACTS
Luke 1:38 NAS
And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Mary never question with doubt. She accepted.

Conclusion

We have the chance here to see the grace and love of God here
We also can see that God keeps His promises
As God promised that Jesus is coming, Genesis 3. we get to see this happening.
