Death of Joshua (v1), Israel’s question (v2).

The death of Joshua is a very traumatic event. Israel has had leaders, Moses and Joshua. Joshua dying leaves Israel hanging dry.

v2 the very fact that Israel consulted God is an indication in my mind that they still wanted to be faithful to Him. (to some degree)

v1-2 are the only positive verses in the book of Judges.
