Hope for Your Hassles Luke 6:17-23
. Everything can be going great for you. You can be minding your own business and then, out of nowhere, a unexpected stressful event pops up
When this happens, our fun turns to frustration and aggravation
In Scotland, they call something that is a hassle a "rammy," like you have just been rammed. The British call their hassles "ding-dongs" because you feel like someone clubbed you on the head and rang your bell. Here in America, we call our hassles "aggravation and annoyances"
In this portion of Luke, we find a large crowd of people entangled in stress and hassles.
We will see the most common creators of stress in our lives in this message and God’s solution to the stress.
. The Stress of Sickness Luke 6:17-19
And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; [18] And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed, [19] And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
People came from everywhere to see Yeshua because they were stressed by sickness. Being sick is not fun. The people came to hear Him, be healed, and helped by the Lord. Some of them were "vexed" by unclean spirits or demonic spirits. The word "vexed" is derived from the Greek word ochleo {okh-leh'-o}which means "to trouble, to molest, to confuse, or put into an uproar."
They were needy people and they went to the right place to get help.
Their weakness softened their will, and directed their way to the Lord we should always be doing the same thing
. This is where you will find hope for your hassles. You will find it in the Lord .
Isaiah 55:6- Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
Psalm 119:67- Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.
The Lord offers hope to those who are sick physically and spiritually.
Hosea 6:1- Come, and let us return unto the Lord: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
II. The Stress of Financial Strain
Luke 6:20-21
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. [21] Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled.
The Lord encourages these people many of whom were suffering from the stress of hunger and financial strains. Roman taxes were heavy, leaving most of the population broke.
Yeshua offered hope for the hassle of poverty by encouraging them with the blessing of the kingdom of Heaven. He was getting their focus on Heaven and eternity
Those things that strain our finances today will be taken care of for eternity.
A. Your Home:
John 14:1-2... Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. [2] In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
1 Peter 1:3-4... Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [4] To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
B. Your Health:
The Lord will provide several things for our health.
2. A new Body
Philippians 3:21- Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
1 Corinthians 15:49- And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
3. Everlasting Life
John 3:36- He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
4. No More Aches, Pains, Sorrow, Tears, and Death
Revelation 21:4- And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
C. No More Thieves:
Matthew 6:19-20... Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Having good character, honor, and integrity make you really rich and blessed.
D Financial Needs
Proverbs 13:7- There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
Proverbs 19:1- Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.
the Lord provides for the needsof those who love and depend on Him, and practice financial biblical principles.
Philippians 4:19- But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
III. The Stress From Sorrow Luke 6:21b
....Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
Those who went to see Yeshua shed tears as they suffered from Roman oppression. The Lord offered hope for their hassles. Those who were weeping were blessed. In fact, their weeping would be turned to joy and laughter one day.
Your tears may not be permanently wiped away on earth, but He can give us our joy and dry our tears with the blessing of His Spirit if you let him Joy is found in the Lord .
2 Corinthians 4:17- For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us afar more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
Psalm 30:5- For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
Dr. R. A. Torrey was one of the great Bible teachers of last century and founder of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA University).
He and his wife went through a time of great heartache when their twelve-year-old daughter was accidentally killed. The funeral was held on a gloomy, rainy day. They stood at the grave and watched the body of their little girl lowered in the ground . As they turned away, Mrs. Torrey said, "I'm so glad that Elisabeth is with the Lord, and not in that box."
But, even knowing this to be true, their hearts were broken. Dr. Torrey said that the next day, as he was walking down the street,—the loneliness of the years ahead without her presence and all the other implications of her death burdened him He was so burdened by this that he looked to the Lord for help.
He said, "And just then, this fountain, the Holy Spirit that I had in my heart, broke forth with such power as I think I had never experienced before, and it was the most joyful moment I had ever known in my life
Charles Weigel no one ever cared for me like Jesus
Sources of Joy for the Born Again
1. Salvation
Psalm 13:5- But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.
2. Spiritual Revival
A renewed relationship with the Lord will help to restore your joy.
Psalm 85:6- Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?
3. Uprightness
Doing what is right has its own Joy and rewards
Psalm 97:11- Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
4. Bible Study and Prayer
If you are discouraged pray and read the Bible..
Psalm 119:24- Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors.
Jeremiah 15:16- Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.
5. Faithfulness to the Lord
God's blessings for faithfulness to Him will yield joy in the believer.
Matthew 25:21- His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
6. Keeping God’s Commandments
John 15:10-11... If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. [11] These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
7. Security From the Lord
Jude 1:24- Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
IV. The Stress From persecution, Slander, and rejection
Luke 6:22-23
Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. [23] Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
These people that came to hear Yeshua needed encouragement. Many of them suffered from the hate and rejection of the Romans and other people.
He encouraged them by telling them to rejoice because their reward in Heaven would be great.
Luke 10:20 (KJV) 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
G. Campbell Morgan at age 25 was one of 150 young men who applied to the Wesleyan ministry in 1888
Two weeks later Morgan's name appeared among the 105 REJECTED applicants for the ministry that year.
Even though Morgan had no formal Bible training for the ministry, his devotion to studying of the Bible made him one of the leading Bible teachers in his day.
His reputation as preacher and Bible teacher spread throughout England and the United States.
He crossed the Atlantic Ocean 54 times to speak in America
In 1896, D. L. Moody invited him to speak to the students at the Moody Bible Institute.
After the death of Moody in 1899, Morgan became the director of the Huge Northfield Bible Conference.
After five successful years in this capacity, he returned to England (in 1904) and became pastor of Westminster Chapel of London.
His preaching and weekly Friday night Bible classes were attended by thousands of people to hear the preaching of the Word of God.
So much for a guy who supposedly could not preach. God used him greatly.
. How does the Lord satisfy us? What leads to contentment or satisfaction in our hearts?
How Does the Lord Satisfy Us?
1. His Providing Good Things for us
Psalm 103:1,5- Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. [5] Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.
Psalm 107:9- For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
2. By having a Close Walk with God
Psalm 34:10- The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.
3. A hunger for righteousness Will Leave You Satisfied
Matthew 5:6- Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
4. Paying Attention to the Lord
Isaiah 55:1,3.... Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
[3] Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
Are you miserable because you are not listening to the Lord?
Without a close relationship with the Lord, there is a void, a vacuum in our life.
H.G. Wells, famous historian and philosopher, said at age 61: "I have no peace. All life is at the end of the tether."
Lots of activity does not necessarily mean you are accomplishing anything.
a Scotchman demonstrated the new game of Golf to President Ulysses Grant.
Carefully placing the ball on the tee, he took a mighty swing. The club hit the ground and scattered dirt all over the President's beard and surrounding vicinity, while the ball was still on the tee.
Again the Scotchman swung, and again he missed. President Grant waited patiently through six tries and then quietly stated, "There seems to be a fair amount of exercise in the game, but I fail to see the purpose of the ball."
James 4:14- Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
