Jesus heals the woman

This woman, who has suffered for 12 years from bleeding
she would have been unclean — an outcast
she had Heard about this Jesus
and she came to him
She touches the hem of his garment — and is healed
Mark 5:29–30 (CSB)
29 Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?”
The text says that she immediately knew (sensed) that she had been healed
she felt it
and so did Jesus
it’s remarkable that Jesus healed this person without even knowing it until it happened.
He also sense that POWER had gone out from him.
Mark may have seen in Jesus’ awareness a sign of his deity; on the other, he candidly described the limitations of Jesus’ humanity (also v. 32).
He knows about the woman and wills to honour her faith in the efficacy of his power active in Jesus, even though her faith is no doubt very imperfect and indeed dangerously near to ideas of magic.

Why Jesus heals

Now Jesus makes it a point to stop and identify the person who had been healed
Why?
was it to shame her? to rebuke her?
Perhaps she was afraid that she had made him unclean or others and that she would be shamed.
rendered the woman religiously unclean so that no pious Jew would have any contact with her (cf. Lev 15:25–30). She had lived as an outcast for 12 years. No doubt Mark recorded the incident to dramatize Jesus’ rejection of the concept of ritual uncleanness and to affirm his acceptance of all persons no matter what their status in society.
5:32–33 The woman may have feared the consequences of defiling a holy man by touching him in her unclean state. She may have feared a rebuke for having delayed Jesus while he was on an important mission. Or she may have been overcome with awe and emotion as a result of all that had happened so quickly. Mark may have set forth her confession as an example of the confession all who have encountered Jesus should make.
Not it was to identify her and to make sure she knew exactly who had healed her and for everyone else to know.
He forces the issue so that when she leaves healed, she will leave knowing that the one who healed her knows her and cares for her. She is a person who is worth taking time with and addressing.
forces her to step out on faith and be identified. It will not bankrupt her as the physicians had done, but she must publicly acknowledge her debt to Jesus, that he is the source of her healing. When she does, he blesses her and announces that her faith has made her well. Faith, then—not any magical properties in Jesus’ clothing—accomplishes her healing and saving. He restores her as a daughter of Israel and tells her to go in peace (Judg. 18:6; 1 Sam. 1:17; 2 Sam. 15:9; Acts 16:36).
Jesus tenderly answers her:
Mark 5:34 (CSB)
34 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”
He points out that it was her faith
he faith that brought her to HIM
Go in PEACE = wholeness, shaloam
It covers wholeness, well-being, prosperity, security, friendship, and salvation. Jesus bestows this peace on her (see Matt. 10:13; Acts 10:36).
you have been healed - restored, cleansed
And her life was restored.

The Timing

This healing happens right int he middle of Jairus’ request
Why?
did this incident help his faith?
if Jesus could heal this woman (based on her testimony) would that help his faith
Just what he needed in a moment of despair?
His servants show up and say his daughter had died
in other words give up hope
But Jesus looks right at him and speaks hope into hopelessness
Mark 5:36 (CSB)
36 When Jesus overheard what was said, he told the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid. Only believe.”
sometimes our faith brings us to Jesus, sometimes our faith brings Jesus to someone else
Believe in what? have faith in what?
In the Son of God — in Jesus
again it isn’t the faith itself that does anything, but only what the faith points to
Hope is restored to the Hopeless by faith
not blind faith, not faith itself
but Faith in Jesus, the son of God who has all authority over disease and death.

Raised from the Dead

Jesus shows up and everyone laughs at Him
Jesus sends them out
this mocking laughter will be changed to joyful laughter in minutes
Notice he only brings the father, mother and the inner three into the room to witness this
Peter, James and John
The Leader, the 1st martyr and the last martyr
He had special training for them. l
for they would be leaders of the church.
And he raises this girl with word.
it’s amazing a miracle.
Did you know that their are accounts even today of people being raised from the dead?
John Baxter - second hand account?
On of our Elders personally knew a woman who had been in ministry in Africa
this person witnessed a man raised from the dead and many came to faith in Jesus as a result.
This was a credible witness
Are you beginning to believe?

Healing and Salvation

Are these people being saved?
I think so.
I think often this is why healings and miracles happen in frontier missions
It is both the proclamation and demonstration of Jesus that evangelizes people.
I think the woman's healing was confirmation of the faith she already had.
she already believed in Jesus
being healed made it real— confirmed her faith.
Same with the man
he felt faith, he exercised faith
but it was solidified when his daughter was raised.
I think this is often the purpose of healing.
to bring people to a saving faith in Jesus.
I don’t think it is always the reason
I think it is also to strengthen people’s faith in Jesus.
It is also because God is a compassionate God
often when jesus heals it is out of compassion for people.
all of these are not mutually exclusive, but work together.

Adds:

In all the miracles of Mark 5, physical healing is a parable of spiritual deliverance.

why does God heal?

B/c it is the realization of the Kingdom of God
for the growth of the Kingdom (evangelism)
For his Glory
b/c he is so great a God
and so compassionate a God
Bring people to Faith in Christ, to strengthen their fAITH

God heals today

we can read this and say that was a nice story
but what does it mean for me today?
Certainly to increase our faith that Jesus did in fact perform these miracles.
that he had the power and authority of God over disease and death
and certainly that this points forward to the future hope of a world free from death and disease
But is that all?
Let’s remember where we are in the gospel of Matthew
The training of the 12, between the Calling (Mark 3:13) and the Commissioning (Mark 6:7)
Certainly the Twelve performed the very works of Jesus
we see that in mark 6
Mark 6:12–13 (CSB)
12 So they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons, anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
We see it in the book of Acts
Peter
heals the lame man: Acts 3:6
Aeneas: Acts 9:32-35
Paul: Acts 14:8-9
Publius on Malta: Acts 28:7-8
Others on Malta: Acts 28:9-10
But we also see that it wasn’t just the 12 Apostles which leads me to believe that these kingdom works are not just for the 12 disciples, but for every disciple of Jesus.
in Luke 10:1 Jesus sends out the 72
Luke 10:1 CSB
1 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and he sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to go.
Luke 10:9 CSB
9 Heal the sick who are there, and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near you.’
Luke 10:17 CSB
17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
In the book of Acts
Philip the deacon
Acts 8:7 CSB
7 For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.
Furthermore the gift of healing is mentioned as a spiritual gift in 1 Cor 12:9
Finally, James 5:14-16 commands us to pray for the healing of the ick
James 5:14–16 (CSB)
14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.

Conclusion

God heals today in the same way he did then
Through faith in Jesus.
Same Jesus today, same mission
in obedience and in faith lets pray for healing.

Exercise

so let’s take a minute
Search your soul — are feeling the faith for healing?
Do you feel that God might want to heal you today?
This can be of literally any affliction, big or small.
Short term or longterm
- nothing is outside of God’s control and power
It could be physical
name a few
It could be mental
anxiety, depression
It could be emotional
unresolved anger, unforgiveness
It could be spiritual
oppression
salvation
No matter how big or small
Jesus still has compassion
Jesus still has authority
Jesus still has power
The kingdom of god is still advancing
So if you are feeling prompted, led or just desire to be healed
would you go ahead and raise your hand.
Maybe you know someone who needs to be healed — let’s pray for them as well
but you need to call them after and check in with them.
so that Jesus gets the glory
I’m going to to a general prayer over us in a minute
go ahead and raise your hand
After I’ll pray
we will continue praying as the Worship Team plays
We’ll have elders/wives off the either side to pray for you
you can go to them or they cane come to you
if you are sitting around someone who needs prayer for healing
would you just extend your hand toward them or if comfortable lay your hands on them.
I’m going to pray in a moment
but after that, please continue praying
Come to an elder or myself if you’d like prayer
If you feel anything, experience any healing
we’d love to know about it so we can glorify Jesus
come and let us know.

Prayer
