Who do you say I am? – Matt 16:16
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
Lets start off first by asking the question why did Jesus ask this?
This was one of Jesus’ favorite teaching tools! His question was aimed at provoking the disciples to consider their level of faith. The immediate results of His question make it clear why He asked them what He did.
So on a theological level this is very deep, and in our faith level this is more deep. This question is still purposed to us in this day.
We may have been baptized, been going to church, even taken classes! But, the question is still brought to us every day, in our weakest moments, in our most trying moments.
Now in Isaiah 9:6 - For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
We hear titles, we hear identification of who Jesus is and this is what He can be to us….
But who do you say He is?
Place of Moses?
Place of Moses?
Moses was in a personal conversation with God in Exodus 3…
Such an awkard conversation, God is telling Moses what to do because He knows Moses can do it, Moses is just aiming out in left field asking questions hoping that He does not have to fulfill what is being asked of Him.
Do we do the same today? God is calling you to be the best you that you can be, and your like but I cant. But, but, but, but, but….
So when moses asks well who do I say sent me? I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
Why do you think He stated I am?
Why do you think He stated I am?
’eh·yeh;is Hebrew text for “I AM” אֶֽהְיֶ֑ה
’eh·yeh pronounced (haw-yaw) means - come to pass, become, be
We know God has all the titles because of who He is, but He tells Moses this because God knew that whatever was in the heart of the believer God would be. God’s title in your life would be healer, redeemer, finisher, miracle worker, King of Kings, by definition would be once you allowed Him to be, it would come to pass, he would become, and be that in our lives.
