Why Did Jesus Die?

Youth Group, Friday 2 February 2007

Introduction

I will start the teaching by drawing a big circle on to a large piece of paper on the floor in the middle of the youth.

·        The circle represents the world.

·        Ask young people to write (or draw pictures) in the circle to show what is wrong with the world today.

·        What can be done about it?

·        Ask young people to write or draw some possible solutions to the problems around the edge of the circle

·        Are these solutions effective?

Will hopefully show a DVD clip of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at this point.

Will state that what we have just seen is the answer to the world’s problems.  Will then look at the root problem.

1.     The Problem

We have all done wrong/gone our own way.  Bible calls this sin (Rom 3:23)

To explain sin in a bit more detail.

2.     The Solution

I plan to show a DVD clip here of someone who sacrifices him/herself to save others.

God loves us so much that he took our place, and suffered the penalty of our sin (1 Peter 2:24)

3.     The Results

Good news.  Explain what the benefits to youth are including-

New relationship with God our creator.

Forgiveness (no need to hold on to guilt)

Eternal life (no need to fear death)

Plan and future (no need to worry about future)

Holy Spirit takes up a home in us.

Guidance. (no need to rely on reading the stars)

I will give a brief personal testimony.

Will also give an opportunity to respond.

Small Group Discussion

Read Luke 15:11-24 The Parable of the Lost Son

·        What kind of life was the son looking for when he left home?

·        What did his life turn out to be like? (v13-16)

·        Have you had any similar experiences in your life?

·        What made him decide to head home? (v17)

·        What does the response of the Father tell us about what God is like?

·        Pray for each other.  Thanks and ask.
