Luke 1:34-45
INTRODUCTION
Who is Lottie Moon
in the 1870’s Lottie, at the age of 32, was appointed to be an imb missionary to China alongside her sister.
Her sister had to return home for health reasons but Lottie stayed for 40 years.
She help found the Women’s Missionary Union which helped raise money to support missionaries.
Her legacy is the IMB.
Over $5 billion dollars have been given to IMB through this Christmas offering.
3600 missionaries supported by 47,000 sbc churches in America.
Panama trip was possible only because of the faithfulness of Southern Baptists to give to the local church, cooperative program, and Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.
One of the ministries we visited are sending nationals all around the world on mission.
IMB partnership- not about salary- its about resources and knowledge.
IMB connects us with national churches so we can help them.
Luke 1:34–45 (ESV)
34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.
36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
37 For nothing will be impossible with God.”
38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”
And the angel departed from her.
39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah,
40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb.
And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
4 Ways We Can Support Missions
1- Submitting (34-38)
Luke 1:34-38
Your obedience to God means that those who are on mission are not alone.
God wants all of us using our gifts.
When one person is not using their gifts it puts pressure on someone else to take up the slack.
1 Corinthians 12:12
Our submitting to Christ affects the whole body of Christ.
2- Seeking (39-40)
Luke 1:39-40
Mary went and found Elizabeth when she learned that she had miraculously conceived.
This was not passive.
- She actively went to find her.
Jesus was never passive in ministry.
Luke 19:10
When he called his disciples he went to them.
Shame on us when we do not know about our missionaries serving around the world.
3- Joining (41-42)
Luke 1:41-42
Being together brought joy.
Mary and Elizabeth needed each other.
Ecclesiastes 4:9
As soon as Mary heard angel says that she wasn’t alone, she immediately took off to be with Elizabeth.
They understood each other’s burden.
Being a servant of Christ is a lonely assignment.
Paul was also seeking out friends to join him.
But there were times like Athens that he had to be obedient alone.
4- Encouraging (43-45)
Luke 1:43-45
They were on same team.
They received joy from each other.
John the Baptist leaped in Elizabeth’s womb.
We need to encourage our missionaries.
Letters
Giving
Many of our missionaries are in lonely settings.
They need to know people care.
They need the resources.
CONCLUSION
Obedience is not easy.
Mary lost a lot when she submitted to God’s call.
Mary carries a burden for her whole life and even has to watch her own son be crucified.
We need to help those who God is using to witness to the ends of the earth.
