Introduction:
People look at the Bible in many ways today. Some see it as ancient writings of men that hold little or no relevance in today's world. Others as a book of proverbs and life sayings and wisdom. But, since its inception, the Bible has been the Words of God breathed unto men. The Bible answers the world view questions:
How did I get here?
What is my purpose for being here?
What happens next?
Throughout the course of time, God has always shared with his people what is coming next, which is called prophecy. A foretelling of the future with immediate life impact. To "Bible Believers," God's Word has always been a book about the future and not about the past. And so it was in the days of Joseph and Mary.
God promised Abraham a son and seed to bring redemption and salvation to the entire world.
God promised Israel a king to subdue all other kingdoms and bring peace to the nation.
God would send his prophets to speak on his behalf and share what was coming next with his people. One of the greatest of these prophets was Isaiah. And in the book, we find two significant prophecies about the promised king.
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The prophecies of old were like the prophecies of today. Some believe, and some don't. Some live their lives based on the prophecies God has given, and some don't.
When we get to the birth of Jesus, 55 prophecies need to be fulfilled about the coming Messiah. And there had not been a prophecy for 430 years. That is six generations of people. This is the scene in which Joseph and Mary are living.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
Joseph is reminded of the prophecies given by God so he would know this is from God. Prophecies are not predictions. Predictions are the natural results of the patterns of the past. If I say 1, 2, 3… you can predict what comes next. Prophecies are spoken truths that haven’t happened yet. When a person lives according to the promises and prophecies given, we say they live by faith. Faith is defined in Hebrews as
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Joseph had a choice to make. He could live by faith in what God had promised or deny what was happening around him.
We have that same choice to make today. I want to focus for a moment on
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
There are 3 aspects of this simple prophecy we need to consider today:
A Child is born reveals the humanity of the King.
A Son is given reveals the deity of the King
His name shall be called reveals the character of the King
The Humanity of the King (A Child is Born)
The Humanity of the King (A Child is Born)
The Son of David
The Son of David
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Heir to the throne of David and the kingdom of Israel.
King of the World with justice and righteousness forevermore.
The Son of Mary
The Son of Mary
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
Born In Time and Space
Born In Time and Space
Born to a real person
Born with flesh and bone
Born to live and die
Born to live and die
He was tempted as we are.
He was hungry.
He was emotional.
He was beaten and endured pain.
He was despised and rejected by others.
The Deity of the King (A Son is Given)
The Deity of the King (A Son is Given)
Jesus is not just a child born is a manger. He is not just a miracle born of a virgin. Jesus is Immanuel, “God with us.”
Jesus is The Son of God. (God in human flesh.)
Jesus is The Son of God. (God in human flesh.)
17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Jesus is The Word of God. (The eternal God.)
Jesus is The Word of God. (The eternal God.)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Jesus is The Lamb of God
Jesus is The Lamb of God
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
A body was prepared for the king.
A body was prepared for the king.
5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. 7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’ ”
A body prepared for sacrifice.
A body prepared for sacrifice.
10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
Joseph believed and acted according to the prophecy given.

Conclusion:
The prophecies of Jesus are not over.
The prophecies of his birth have been fulfilled (all 55 of them).
The prophecies of his death have been fulfilled
The prophecies of his resurrection have been fulfilled
We are now living is the prophecies of his glorious return.
9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
