· 16 viewsChrist will come again in judgment. However, the first advent of Christ was one that was filled with joy as the promised Messiah had come to bring salvation to all of creation. Elizabeth’s encounter with Mary is a testimony to the purpose of Jesus’ coming – taking that which is lifeless and giving new life. That brings joy.

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
After learning that she will be carrying the Son of God in her womb from the angel Gabriel, Mary arrives at the home of her cousin, Elizabeth, who is also with child. We learn from earlier in Luke’s text that Elizabeth had been barren for many years and unable to have children. It was not until the Holy Spirit came upon her that she and her husband, Zechariah, were able to conceive a child who would be John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus. It was truly a miracle from God. The news of such a miraculous birth would be more joyful than anyone could image.
2. We are joyful because God always blesses us. (vs. 42-43)

8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
3. The joy of the Lord in us affects others around us. (vs. 44-45)

20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
