The command.

V.45

45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.

constrained - ἀναγκάζω anagkázō

To force, compel in a moral sense as by authoritative command (Matt.

14:22; Mark 6:45);

Modern versions change to “made” to keep their Calvinist status and disillusionment intact.

The communion.

V.46

46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.

The most compelling argument for prayer is that Jesus Christ prayed.

47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.

The alarm.

V.49

49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:

After seeing Jesus raise a dead girl back to life, feed 5,000, etc. they still flounder in Old superstitious ways.

How many times have we tried to cling to old wives tales, fables, and religious folk lore instead of believing God and His Word?

The assurance.

V.50

50 For they all saw him, and were troubled.

And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

Be of good cheer - phrase occurs 7 times

θαρσέω tharséō

be of good cheer, have courage, spoken by way of encouragement

Matthew 9:2 (AV)

And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. .

John 16:33 (AV)

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.

In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Acts 23:11 (AV)

And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

Do not go around so angry, negative, and down: BE OF GOOD CHEER!

Two ways we see in them they were not going forward with the Lord:

Staying in ignorance.

51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.

wondered -

The presentation to the sight or mind, of something new

Wonder is the effect of novelty upon ignorance

In Rev. 13:3, "to wonder after the beast" (a.t.), i.e., to admire and follow him, to become his worshiper.

Staying in unbelief.

52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

Previous attempts had not convinced them.

Previous answers had not convinced them.

They have to watch Jesus do what they were supposed to do.

Vs.53-56

53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.

54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,

55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.

56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
