· Romans 6 — Freedom from Sin Romans 6 Picks up back on “20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more”,-Romans 5:20 NASB. Paul is aware that this if not explained in detail will lead to erroneous way in thought; that Sinning would yield more grace so therefore continue to Sin and he gives a simple and concise answer “ 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?” -Romans 6:2 NASB. Since we are dead to sin itself how can we live in it?; “4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” -Romans 6:4 NASB. Being buried with Christ into death becoming united in likeness means to rise with him into the likeness of Christ to walk in newness of life and live with him; “6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;” -Romans 6:6 NASB. The death to Sin is so Mankind’s sinful nature may be put away in death so Believes can be freed from Sin; no longer being slaves to Sin but to offer ones life to God “9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.” -Romans 6:9–10 NASB. Paul tells the audience to consider themselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus therefore no longer allowing and putting the members(parts of the body/flesh) at the disposal to be continually used by Sin as tools for unrighteousness, now that Sin is no longer their master and can no longer rule them under the Law because they are under God’s grace; instead to present their bodies to God as instruments of righteousness. “12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.” -Romans 6:12–13 NASB. This once again leads to question if Believers should Sin since they are under God’s grace and Paul once again answers negatively “16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.” -Romans 6:16–18 NASB. One can only serve one master and since believers are no longer slaves to Sin then they became obedient to the teaching of the Master becoming slaves of righteousness and thanks be to God for it, changing from slaves unto death to slaves unto life. Paul compares the difference in both, one being a slave to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness versus being a slave to righteousness leading to santification; consicrating and becoming more morally pure. Reminding believers that there is no benefits in doing what now brings them shame specially when the outcome is Death, when the benefit of being a slave to God is santification and ETERNAL LIFE “21 Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. -Romans 6:21 NASB. Paul bring to attention that Sin = Death, that is the wages due (paid deserved) but the Free Gift of God by the Grace of Jesus equals ETERNAL LIFE in Jesus Christ our Lord(κύριος/ kyrios= owner,Lord and master). “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” -Romans 6:23 NASB.
