· Romans 7—Married to Christ Romans 7 Paul firstly talks to those who know the Law and makes them aware of the fact that the Law has jurisdiction over them for life and uses marriage between a husband and a wife to explain his point by highlighting the fact that dying to sin releases believers to freedom; allowing believers to now marry Jesus Christ and freeing them from the Law justly by the Law through Jesus Christ. “2 For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband. 3 So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man.” -Romans 7:2–3 NASB. At once addressing Believers that therefore since they have died to Law so that can now lawfully join to another ;being Jesus who was raised from the dead so that we may bear fruit(of the spirit) for God now serving in the newness of the Spirit(Holy Spirit) and not in the oldness of The Letter( Law) considering that while in the flesh the law aroused the body’s sinful nature to bear fruit for death. Once again raising another controversial point; does that make The Law Sin?; Paul answers that on the contrary, without the law one can not be aware that they are going against it or missing the mark(Sin) “8 But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.9 I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; 10 and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;” -Romans 7:8–10 NASB. Without The Law there is ignorance to Sin therefore it is “dead” living ignorantly to it there is no wages due for transgressing but when God’s people were commanded to keep the Law; Sin became alive(known) as a result death was due for Breaking the Commandment; As Paul mentions Sin deceived him and through the commandments killed him, he reminds Believers that The Law is holy and can never become the cause of Death but the fact that Sin leads/requires death shows the severity of its utter sinfulness and shows that it is “ Sin”(something bad) through the Commandments(that is Good). Paul emphasizes that The Law is Spiritual (Πνευματικός/pneumatikos = of or characterized by The Holy Spirit) but he and all mankind is of the flesh which is bondaged to Sin. For this reason he who agrees with The Law confessing that is good and is willing to do what the law dictates, habitually continues to do the thing he hates (Sin) showing that there is nothing Good dwells in him and it is the cause of his continual transgression.”17 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.” -Romans 7:17 NASB. Paul notes that he sees two separate laws within him fighting; the law of his flesh which is sinful and his new nature that wants to do good, Showing the contrast between living bound to the law and living by the Spirit of God; The awesome freedom gained through Jesus Christ to choose to no longer be “married” to Sin and instead be married to Christ.“22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man,23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.” -Romans 7:22–25 NASB.
