Godly instructions/reminders for the godly
Faithful sayings, are sayings worth remembering.
Sayings for instruction, sayings for remembering, sayings for protection, but most of all sayings for application as we serve the church.
Paul teaches the same in thing in all the churches, and since we are in a study of Timothy, how about some faithful sayings just from Timothy that we have already seen, or will see today?
(Insert Five Faithful Sayings of Paul Picture here)
(the scriptures below are not on the screen, will just be quoted or paraphrased)
Sayings regarding Jesus came to save sinners (1Tim1:15)
Sayings regarding those who desire office of elder (1Tim3:1)
Sayings regarding value of Godly exercise (1Tim4:8-9)
1tim4:8-9
Saying to Titus about salvation through God’s grace (Tit3:4-8)
OK so this last one is not from Timothy, but it really fits with the lesson today so I had to bring it in.
Oh, wait, that was only 4 faithful sayings and the previous slide said 5!
To keep things in context and to pick up a couple of verses not previously covered
Paul was willing and had been enduring many troubles, hardships for the church for the sake of the elect so they may have, obtain eternal glory through salvation which is in Christ Jesus.
Now for the 5th faithful saying.
Saying regarding death and life in Christ Jesus (2Tim2:11-13)
Some key, faithful words to make note of: If we died, we also live.
If we endure, we also reign!
Even if we are faithless, He is faithful!
According to Barnes Notes, one of the bible commentaries and encyclopedias it says faithful sayings are worthy of entire credence and profound attention.
Remember the reason for the letter is to prepare Timothy to take over for Paul upon his death.
He knew he was being poured out already (2Tim4:6).
He wanted to encourage timothy to endure hardship for Christ.
maybe better back up again for just a minute
(Expand; Remember Jesus, the resurrection, the salvation made available)
(Expand: Hardship)
(Transition): faithful says should encourage us to persevere, the endure to strive through hardships as well.
So, now may we look at 4-things today.
Our beginning life with Christ
Our promised life with Christ
Life without Christ
Restoration to a life with Christ
Beginning life with Christ
Life begins with Christ (2Tim2:11).
We were dead and separated before, but now, we are alive in Christ, born again.
Paul is giving faithful reminders to Timothy that we too can learn from in our life and our service to Christ.
If we died with Him (Rom6:3-8)
We die when we are baptized into Christ
So that we might live, and walk in newness of life
(Expand: our death is imperative)
For we die to the ways of this world
Consider it is in other places our death
You are dead to dead works that cannot save you, the elementary principals, so don’t live as the world, your life is in Christ, for you were raised with Christ, and hidden in Christ (Col3:3).
(Other scriptures used or referenced: Col2:20, 3:3; Gal2:20)
(Transition) Remember it is no longer you who lives but Christ who lives in you! - speaking of which, we also can know we live with Him.
We shall live with Him (2Tim2:11; Rom6:4; Col2:12-13, 3:4)
A sure thing! a confidence we can have.
Knowing we can and are walking in the newness of life (Rom6:4)
(Expand)
Raised up through faith
Raised up by the working of God
Raised up, made alive with Him having your sins forgiven!
Have you died?
Have you been raised up having your sins forgiven?
If you have then we can have the assurance we find in our passage today too.
Our promised life with Christ
Our promised, guaranteed life in Christ and with Christ is a great truth, a trustworthy statement.
It does come with some conditions, responsibilities though.
Life with Christ if we endure (v.12)
Endure hardship (Jn15:20; Act14:22; 2Tim3:12)
Jesus was persecuted and those in Christ, who keep His word will be too (refJn15:20; consider 2Tim3:12 too)
Through many tribulations we enter the kingdom of God
So, continue in the faith!
Be ready to endure and to persevere!
Endure and persevere (Heb10:35; Mt10:22)
and now look at
(expand) becoming a Christian is easy it just takes your cooperation, growing as a Christian takes your participation.
The question comes are we willing to endure (Heb6:11-12)?
(Expand) who inherits the promises?
Those who hope until the end, through faith do not become sluggish, and have patience.
This was the prayer that each of the people be earnest, to have the assurance!
(Transition) and if that is not enough, let me go on.
We shall also reign with Him (2Tim2:12; Rev3:21, 22:5; Eph2:4-7; Rom8:17)
If we died with him, we live with Him
If we endure we will also reign
Even as Jesus said Himself.
(expand) He overcame, you overcame, He reigns and has promised that You too, who endure, who overcome, will reign too.
That starts when you became a Christian and is fulfilled when you are presented to the Father without spot or blemish.
Consider
As mentioned the fulfillment
As mentioned in recent video salvation takes cooperation, growth takes participation, are we willing to participate?
(transition) we have to be honest not participating, not enduring has consequences when we look at this faithful statement this morning.
Life without Christ
If you have life with Christ is there a possibility to have a life without Christ?
or to give up our life with Christ.
Many an arguments have ensued over this issue.
This morning may we just look at what scripture says.
Life without Christ, happens if we deny Him (2Tim2:12; Mt10:32-33; Lk9:26)
We have looked at (v.12) in several versions already, so I will look to other scripture to add to what (v.12) says
Notice the hard language used “I WILL” - So, confession equates to confession
Oh, ashamed of the Lord, that is not a good thing, is it?
Oh, wiat, there is more, this can be for those who were purchased, those who were redeemed
and add in
Now Consider
OK, for when we deny Him, He will deny us as noted in our passage today (2Tim2:12-13; Mt10:33; Lk12:9; Heb10:26-31)
Deny us before His Father (Mt10:33) as we just read a few minutes ago
Deny us before the angels of God (ref.
Lk12:9)
This rejection, denial has eternal consequences
