Introduction
So far, we have seen that
A Prophecy Is Spoken, we explored the context of this familiar Christmas prophecy
A Child Is Born, we contemplated the humanity of Jesus
Transition
And now, A Son Is Given
Illumination
Isaiah 9:6 NKJV
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Given To Whom?

Given to man

317 times in the Gospels, Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of man
Luke 19:10 NKJV
10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Not Given as sons are normally given

Matthew 13:54–58 NKJV
54 When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” 57 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” 58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
Throughout much of history, the role of sons was to continue their father’s work. The expectation that Jesus would do likewise was a limitation on His ability to do HIS work. It did not in any way fulfill HIS true purpose.

Given to Mary and Joseph, the people (not their professions)

Matthew 1:18–21 NKJV
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
His prophecies, His birth, even His name, all pointed to a purpose greater than any truly understood. He was given to people to save people.

Given By Whom?

Mark 1:1 NKJV
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
“Son of God” is a title used in the Gospels to refer to Jesus. Interestingly, He never used this title to refer to Himself…though He did occasionally confirm it when other people used it. It was certainly accurate.
Galatians 4:4–5 NKJV
4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Again, as the son of God, we see Him having a purpose greater than many truly understood. He was given by God to buyback people for God.

Given for What?

Jesus was a man, but He was no ordinary man. He had a purpose, but it was no ordinary purpose
He came to seek and to save
He came to rescue and redeem
Conclusion
Though Jesus, God the Son, deserves all of the gifts that we could possibly give Him, He came as the Son of God to give gifts to us. The greatest, though not only, gift He gave was the gift of salvation.
Christmas morning, presents under the tree are yours, but not until you open them and take possession of them.
We need to receive it in order to possess it. Though all have received the gift, many never open it.
Application
After we receive our gift and give thanks for it, the great purpose we have been given is to encourage people to open their gift.
