Background and Context

Jesus is being hunted
Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem
Demonstration of love by the washing of Disciples Feet
Dark moments: Judas betrayal and Peter’s Denial
Jesus will be tried, crucified and buried
John 14:1–7 ESV
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
The singularity and exclusivity of “THE” there is no other way, truth, or life-There is no middle ground

What Life?

When you hear the term “This is the Life” what comes to mind?
John 5:39–40 ESV
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
John 20:31 ESV
but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
John 10:10 ESV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Abundant Life

That "abundant" life means something more meaningful than material wealth and prosperity
Colossians 3:2–3 ESV
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
It begins with salvation from an eternity of suffering the penalty of sin
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
An abundant life is, first and foremost, eternal life
John 17:3 ESV
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
The abundant life means gaining a heavenly perspective
Romans 12:2 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Life of Walking by Faith - Not Sight

Up to this point the Disciples have operated with Jesus by sight
John 14:12 ESV
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
Your Christian life cannot and should not be an appendix
God will not take you to the destination he has planned for you if you love the world more than you do him
You know you’re growing spiritually when you love to God increases over your love for the world
Regulate Jesus to a friend level
Perfect Example - Paul and Silas in Acts 16
Philippians 4:11 ESV
Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.
What is Paul and Silas’ Situation

Everlasting Life

John 14:19 ESV
Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
The deliverance Jesus was about to provide was a true deliverance from a life of bondage to sin and death, to a life of freedom IN ETERNITY
